I suppose there is no point wasting money if you don't want to but I am amazed at how many of you guys in the US have bought the 2.3.

I thought that Ford only built it with the rest of the world in mind especially in Europe with everything set against you if one buys a big engined car.

With your petrol at about $2 I would be buying the biggest engine possible if I lived over there.

In the UK petrol is about $8 a gallon btw but I'm still going 5.0.

Mind you my current daily a 1998 e36 only gets 19mpg in London traffic and my departed Marquis only got 12mpg. Guess the Mustang won't be such a shock to me lol
it all becomes relative when you compare the distances that the average american drives per year vs the average european. Over here in Germany, everything is so close together that you rarely have to drive more than 10 miles to get everywhere you need to go. THe US can be totally different if you live in a remote area.

The cost of petrol is not the issue, the issue is how often you use the car.

I am kinda glad I don't have to make that choice, really. It's affordable to get the 2.3L EB, the v8 5.0 is already twice the price due to CO2 taxes to buy here.

I'll be perfectly happy with the EB. Like others in this thread, this car will have more than twice the power of my previous car. The average car here is a 90HP tin can, so this car is plenty awesome in comparison.

It's actually both, multiplied together!
Yeah in theory but in practice, at least hopefully for the near future, petrol is not going to be so high so that you cant drive a V8 only at say weekends. Otherwise it'll affect people with less thirsty cars who use their car all the time.

I had a RX-8 from 2006-10, all the way through the paying £1.40 odd a litre ( yes my 'Merkin friends, that's £1.40 per litre)

It had a 61 litre tank, best I got ONCE was 300 miles out the tank. I was lucky to get 14-16mpg in town and 25-27 on a run. It only had a 1.3 Rotary (2.6 displacement).

My 3.7l V6 Datsun, gets at least 23-25 in town and low 30's on a run/mixed/hair on fire type driving

This makes me expect AT LEAST 50 mpg from my 5.0 Mustang!! Well that's my man maths at any rate

Just noticed this thread .... very interesting perspective! I've had my 2.3T for a month now. It has more than met my expectations. In Texas, driving a few hundred miles @75 MPH is not unusual. I have been getting about 34 MPG (US) on the hwy (I was getting about 28 with the 2011 Mustang 6). If I drove at a lower steady speed the 2.3T MPG is higher. When I have some fun accelerating/passing, the boost smoothly kicks in and the power (torque) is wonderful. No regrets, no excuses.... I also tried the Coyote 8 cyl config, it was also wonderful, but without the great gas mileage and slightly heavier feeling when turning (8 is heavier and up front). I am considering an exhaust upgrade to get that deep turbo sound. If you race, get the 8, otherwise for daily and some sporty driving get the 2.3T (very tunable for racing specs later if needed). Just an opinion.

I too had an RX-8, and that's why I'm going Ecoboost! I've had my fill of calculating minor route improvements, combining shopping trips etc to save fuel, then getting stung once a year by a mahoosive tax bill.

Ecoboost is already stretching my finances with the purchase price - any other car at this spec/price and I wouldn't consider it. But man, MUSTANG!

A few people have hit upon the point that it's not all just about engine size and power. Some of us have a little button that the magic 8 knows how to press. It's about how it sounds and how it makes you feel, it's integral to the spirit of these beasts. If the GT wasn't being sold in the UK, I wouldn't be ordering one. To me the ecoboost is like alcohol free beer or quorn burgers.

I fully understand and respect why people would choose the ecoboost; you just don't have that switch in your head, or heart, wherever it is. You are the lucky ones because you can exercise at least a modicum of financial restraint.

The Mustang in entirely about personal choices. When the Mustang was first introduced at the World's Fair in N.Y. in 1964, I was there wanting that car so bad (bit too young and no money, mostly no money). It did not have an 8-cyl engine. The "Pony Car" was conceived as a personal sporty car, whether with a turbo4, 6 or 8..... NOT a "Muscle Car" (muscle cars are all about the engine). In the 50 years of admiring Mustangs, no two ever seem the same, whether color, mods or ENGINE. (Half the Mustang buyers are women). People in the states also think the Mustang is supposed to have a V-8 to be a "genuine" Mustang.... a very common misconception (Mustang is confused with being a muscle car, but it CAN be a strong muscle car, a really fast race car, or a really cool and sporty daily driver. I do agree, however, that the exhaust needs to be swapped out for a more "Mustang-like" sound.... the 2015s are all too stifled, including the Coyote. Next week I'll put a better (deeper) exhaust on my 2.3T so I too can have a "real Mustang".
