Remove your intake tube. Their will be a housing on the driver side of the motor with 2 bolts hold the coolant hose to the housing.
Remove the 2 bolts (make sure you have a splash pan under neath)
Once drained, replace thermostat with new one
Once its all secured, add coolant back to the tank and keep the cap off. Start the car and let it idle till its up to temp (165-180*) I would start squeezing the coolant hose (like a heart beat) to make sure you remove all the air pockets. You will see bubbles in the tank.
Add fluids as needed till full
***REMEMBER.... YOU WILL NEED A TUNE FOR THIS. THE FANS NEED TO BE TURNED ON SOONER ***
The factory system is not open till 210* With this, your going to be around 180-195 ECT range which these motors run best at .
I installed my 170* temp stat a week ago and topped off the coolant afterwards. I've noticed lately when I start the car I can hear the fluid running through the heater core when I am sitting in the car letting it warm up. Is this normal? Maybe I've just never noticed it before lol
I've only driven my car for a month but I want to put in a 170 t-stat before moving to AZ to go along with my Lund tune. If I drain the system via the radiator petcock mentioned above into a new clean pan can I just reuse the fluid? Seems like a waste of resources to throw it out.
I installed the 170 T stat on my car a few weeks ago. Jacked up the front of the car removed the splash shield, installed a 8" piece of 3/8" ID hose on the petcock (passenger side) and drained into a clean 3 gallon bucket. It drains extremely slow, even with the cap off the coolant tank! Pulled the intake tube, then pulled the thermostat. it still spilled about a cups worth of coolant that was trapped in the housing. Then I re-installed everything and dumped the coolant back in with a funnel. When refilling I just pumped the radiator hose by hand to work the air out.
I only had maybe a little over a gallon of coolant drain out. I think a lot of the coolant stayed in the motor and heater core having only jacked up the front of the car.
Definitely noticed the cylinder head temp does not go over 195 on my car now and really stays between 187-190 most of the time.
I'm in the middle of swapping out my thermostat right now; when I pulled off my old thermostat a rubber O-ring/gasket came out with the thermostat. After I put my new thermostat in, does that o-ring/gasket just sit on the top of the thermostat?
Or is there a grove somewhere that it's supposed to fit into?
