I'm planning ahead and need to make some choices about the 10R80 and how to either make it reliable or swap it out. My car recently went 9.3@153 so with that power level the stock one is not going to last long. I have a few questions:

1. I've been looking at rebuilds (Suncoast category 2) that add clutches and add the thermal bypass. Is this something that would make the trans reliable for a few seasons at ~900whp? I don't want to have to pull the trans every season..

2. I would like to add a transbrake to the car to help with the 60 foot (Centri car problems). Using something like the 10RStager, how hard on the trans is a transbrake? Will it shorten the life a little? A lot?

3. For the cost of a rebuild (Midnight performance quoted $5500) and a converter ($2000 through Circle D) I can be done with the 10R80 and swap to a TH400 ($7000 through JPC). Is this the better choice?

Looking for any input from some of you guys that have gone fast (touching 8s would be nice). What do you recommend or what did you do that you liked/disliked.

Thanks!

194-205 cruising. 230+ after a pass.
230.is already too high. I think you have probably some intercoolers in the front the trans cooler.
The bypass works a lot. (Where will u get it?)
I would increase the trans cooler size tho ..

The suncoast clutches are a must for u.
What would i do if it was me ? (I just roadcourse the 10speed)
Consider these:
1.minimum The suncoast clutches with bigger drum capacity (i think is cat 2)
2. The cat 3 is also including better body valve e more important a better pump to increase psi.
3. One of the think constantly kept out is the converter discussion is after market converters (i.e.Circle D ) use same Oem style converter with a different stall speed. The issue is the Built in lockup clutch. At your powers that might be the first thing to fail. Suncoast has a converter that has a separate lockup clutch. And better overall design......but is 4000$

In my roadcourse racecar i have a setrab 934 cooler thermal bypass and base aftermarket clutches (not bigger capacity)
I lost 2 trans already (im at 17k miles) because too hot and after i fix the issue of overheating... I ran too low fluid damaging the output shaft (no lubrication)
So It is smart to be proactive...but..the more you are the more you pay. Although 10 speed is definetely a great trans for your application.
One last thing..more a side note
Many of you drag racers are not considering the Aero elements you could add to reduce drag.. and at those speeds every detail counts.
I'd like to know if u have any aero elements in yours :)

Thanks for the reply. I was looking at the suncoast category 2 or 3 depending on if I wanted to use their new valve body. sounds like that might be a good choice.

I have no aero updates to my car. The exterior is factory stock.

I'm currently in the process of getting my 10 speed rebuilt. I asked the builder about the new Suncoast valve body and he said he wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole. Not sure why. So I went with the Suncoast cat 2 rebuild

What exactly is rebuilding? Change the sealing and clutches?

I strongly suggest to check on stuff like a rear diffuser and other parts to reduce drag verus engineers have great stuff for our platform for that (diffuser and some front wheel well drag reduction)
You will also benefit to less brake weights using a 2piece rotors (girodisc 11lbs each less) and kenny brown rear rotor (4lbs each less)
DM me if you would like to chat about it :)
