Best oil now that Pennzoil changed formula?

I'm attaching some reference information on this topic.

Previously, I was made aware of labeling changes to Pennzoil's products. Like many, I hadn't noticed the update.

Twelve days ago, The Motor Oil Geek posted a video on this topic. A link to that video is in the referenced thread and below.

If you go to the 10-minute mark, he begins to discuss test results between "old" Pennzoil Platinum and PUP and "new" Platinum and PUP.

One topic of interest in the results has to do with Oil Oxidation Stability. In the video, the Motor Oil Geek notes a change in this reading for both Pennzoil Platinum (-10%) and Pennzoil Ultra Platinum (-8%).

Oil Oxidation Stability is a measure of how resilient an engine oil is to breaking down when met with oxygen. All oils breakdown when interacting with oxygen inside an engine. Oil temperature and other factors affect how quickly these chemical processes can occur. The Motor Oil Geek noted the oils tested were less resilient than before.

On August 14th, someone purporting to be "-Will Cramer, Pennzoil Product Portfolio Manager", began posting at the Bob The Oil Guy site. In those posts, he clarifies some of the recent changes to Pennzoil's Platinum and Pennzoil's Platinum High Mileage oils. He states PUP's formulation has not changed.

If just starting to study this topic, you could begin with these references, maybe read some additional sites. You might come to the conclusion there's nothing to see here. You might sense it's time to change to something else.

Spoiler Alert: the reductions in base stock supplies is a global phenomenon. I doubt Pennzoil is the only company making adjustments.

I'm using PUP in two vehicles. I haven't read anything this morning that makes me want to change. YMMV.

The Motor Oil Geek and other sites are probably discussing what adjustments are taking place industry-wide. With the current talks focusing on Pennzoil, it might be best to wait for some additional testing and results of other products if contemplating a switch.

I edited the main post, you are correct. Platinum line did change but it's a temporary change with a gtl blend but the iconic Ultra platinum line remains 100% gtl and has not changed at all (except a upgrade in 2025 with better additives). Ordered myself some ultra platinum for my oil change and have given up worrying about it since even Pennzoils official website FAQ says that the ultra platinum has not changed and Pennzoil reps have said the packaging change is just marketing as they change what they do with the limited space they have on bottles to advertise etc.

As to the oil this thread is actually about, I’ve always used either the manufacturer’s oil brand or Pennzoil. Use case will have some impact on what you use, but for regular street driving, Motorcraft or even the revised PUP will be just fine

I'm sticking with Pup for now. Canceled my order last night but after more research (pup has not changed it been revised) I reordered and will be doing it. Not entirely sure I need to since my oil is only about 2500 miles old but probably a year or so old and my dash keeps yelling at me oil change due and my oil life is at like 1% so I'm going to change it to play it safe and filter. I buy wix filters by the 6 pack so I do a filter every 3k miles

The oil life monitor runs on time and mileage. If you haven’t hit the mileage within 12 months, it will tell you to change it at 12 months. I have to go back and look but I believe it’s the earlier of 12 months or 5k miles

Did you check the bobmis the oil guy? Pennzoil has confirmed that platinum formula changed but the Pennzoil ULTRA PLATINUM has remained the same 100% unchanged. At least for now there's no reason to change since the formula has not changed the 8% error shown by lakespeed is contributed to a stop small volume, material handling and repeatability does not show there results. Pennzoils official website even says ultra plat is still a 100% natural gas base in the faq and they can't say that if it's not true.

Check out the forum, the rep there said it and on the last page or 2 someone shows the official site faq. Their platinum line DID change. The ultra plat did NOT change and people are getting them confused

I mean it's 500 miles away, I barely drive the car ATM due to body work and issues going on so I might aswell change it atleast then I'll feel better about driving it since 2500 is more of a guestimate. It's either 2500 or 2200 I forget which trip a or b I used for my oil change tracking since I don't have stickers

What's it run per 5 quart? Pennzoil ultra plat is $35 free shipping and that's inflated from the shortage. I'm seeing amsoil equivalent 60-80 per 5 quart

Its like 13 bucks, but I don't buy Amsoil because its the cheapest, its the other thing. I'm on my 2nd motor and the first one died in part due to oil/bearings, so saving a few bucks on oil isn't top priority for me.

Mostly Motorcraft 5w30 generally for the life of that 1st motor.

I was not impressed with how long it lasted and could really tell from lifter noise when it aged out, which very quick in my use case.

Castrol edge till I die. Never had an engine falure running Castrol. For 50 years.
