How concerned should I be about the 2016 and 17 oil consumption issue?

I think what he’s saying is that if you’re going to be constantly worried about the engine grenading, you should look at something else that won’t cause you to worry as much. Hard to enjoy a car when you’re constantly worried about something happening when driving it.

The vibrations of the FPC will increase the risk of an engine issue, it just is what it is. If you care for it properly, get the oil up to temp before driving it hard, you will reduce that risk. But it’s not ever going to be zero. Hell, coyotes will grenade from time to time, shit happens.

Remember too, people that have/had issues will always be the louder voices than those that didn’t. If an engine lets go, they will come here and other places to say so. Those that drive theirs without issue aren’t going to post “drove it today, it didn’t blow up”. Many boosted Voodoo’s without issue in here as well, for whatever that’s worth to you.

End of the day it’s your money and what you’re comfortable with.

Since oil consumption concerns you, it will also concern whoever you in turn sell it to unless you can document your's doesn't. Regardless, they seem to still sell.
If you can pick up a 2016-18 with a replaced motor likely won't have an oil consumption issue.
No one knows what percentage of those model years have a problem so it's a crap shoot, unless you can get an Oasis report or honesty from whom you buy it.
Does not appear that most oil consuming engines blow up.
5W-50 is expensive so if you are going to put on a lot of miles or long trips I don't think you want an oil burner.
Take it to a good mechanic before you buy, if those model years and original engine and no reliable data, for a compression and leak down test for reassurance.
Due diligence. Nothing in life is certain.
Still love mine. New engine at 55K (broke in hard after up to temp and went from 1 qt per 3300 miles eventually down to 1 qt/400 miles) and no (I mean zero) oil consumption now up to 75K. And so no, you don't have to break in hard, softer on the replacement and worked just fine.

There are waaaay more 5.0's than 5.2's

and there are waaay more oil burning or blown engine threads about 5.2's than 5.0's

that should tell you they're problematic

Oil consumption, by itself, isnt much of a problem. The 16 coyote I had used more oil than the voodoo I run now.

Yes some voodoos will fail. Mine makes piston slap noises until good and warmed up. It you’re going to worry about it, any 18-23 is going to still be very very quick. Personally, I think the voodoo is pretty special and its worth it for however long.

I'll tell you the year of the car is irrelevant. Even the "gen 2s" have had the same problems. From my experience in looking before I bought my 2016. I saw more gen 2 engines being replaced than gen 1s. All that said I have a 2016 with almost 80k no issues and I beat the hell out of it. Just check the oil like any performance car.

People don't seem to understand. The oil use is the bi-product of the race engine. 12-1 compression, 8k revs and low tension rings. Ford Performance oil doesn't help the case with a bad NOACK rating. Switch to Amsoil or Mobil 1 Supercar.

Regardless, check your oil levels. The first wave of failed motors came from guys changing their oil at 10k miles to find out there were only 2 quarts left.

Needless to say, don't buy a race motor from a kid. This is a grown people car that needs grown people responsibility.

When i bought my car, someone was trying to sell a gen.2 replacement car for around $36k. The internet myths have since changed reality.

I would much rather rebuild the original motor than to have a gen2 slapped in the car. Both will eventually fail, so i'd rather have the original motor.

hot take: running lucas is a good idea and helps with oil consumption issues, also if your really worried about it you can go upto a 5w 40 or 5w 50, it will still burn just not as much, ive heard of people in hotter states like texas and arizona running a 10w 30 or 40 as well which helps, please dont flame me for suggesting lucas.

I feel like the gen 2 motor is just stronger overall but I get what you are saying, I have had my gen 3 replaced under warranty and they said they fixed the oil burning and other issues with the motor but they never issued a recall, super weird.

First, Ford made 4 times the amount of 16 to 18 cars compared to 19 and 20. So the failure rate will seem a lot worse than it really is for the Gen 1.

Second, if you are serious about getting a GT350 make sure you do your due diligence. Start with getting as much history as you can about the prospective car. Get a Carfax, take the VIN number to your local Ford dealer and have service run an OASIS report. That will show any warranty repair history. Always inspect the car in person or have someone you trust do it for you if out of town.

Always buy the best car you can afford. Don't be afraid of dealerships and places like Carmax. You can gather lots of info as most offer free Carfax etc. Last year I bought my 2018 at Carmax. They were great to deal with. I was able to get a lot of service history from them along with checking the Carfax and having Ford run the OASIS. I had them ship the car from out of state that was 400 dollars but worth it because I was able to do a visual inspection and test drive. There were a couple of repairs that were needed but they took care of everything and also offered their 5 year 70k Maxcare warranty for 2k. If you are looking at a private sale car always run a Carfax and have the Ford dealership run the report for warranty repairs.

I have a late build 17 since new. Broke it in correctly and always let the car warm up...always. Now have 18 K miles and it essentially does not burn any oil (only a fraction between oil changes). Car runs strong and hasnt had one issue since new. My 2 cents

I remember at the GT350 Track Attack the instructors told us to hold the engine against the 8,250 rpm limiter on several of the corners rather than make one more shift. That was an unfamiliar thing for me to do, but I did it. Those cars were running on track 5 days a week, held against the limiter every lap over and over.

The Voodoo is built to handle the RPM. I think if you don't run it all the way up you are missing out.

Or buy a 19/20. Or a car that already has a new motor.
