I thought I might have been wrong but I keep all the receipts. Same price on our Explorer. So yes I feel it’s worth it to let them do it. Figure I can handle most else.

For that price, there's no way the dealer touched the oil pan, let alone changed the oil filter and I'm assuming the cost was just for a fluid flush/exchange? The 10R80 filter is huge and it should handle normal contamination without clogging or inhibiting oil flow for 150K (it passed such validation requirements under "normal" vehicle and dynamometer tests.) If you're a performance enthusiast, OEM service intervals are replaced by common sense and that's where switching to a PPE oil pan is a major upgrade and takes the mess out of oil and filter changes. Flushing the torque converter and cooler is usually not necessary but, if you have concerns, it's always an option and not that difficult.
You are right, thanks. Checked the receipt and indicates a flush and no mention of a filter. Looked it up and $350-$600 for a full service.

i bought it at age 67 and just turned 76. It definitely has not been abused. More of a daily driver. Probably never been above 5,000 rpm. Did that with my 442 and 427 ‘66 chevelle in the 60’s.
Do you think the trans filter should be changed with 79k on it?

My thought is that I will probably be about halfway through my ownership when I change it. I’m thinking in a couple years, when I might be at 75K kms. Spread that cost over time and mileage and it’s peanuts, without worrying about not getting it right or burning myself.

In my humble opinion the best time to do the first change is pretty early on to get any metal out of the trans as the filter will not get small particles. The filter should be done at the same time. I did mine at 40K if I remember correctly and again around 60K. The price of rebuilding one of those transmissions can reach $7K so waiting too long is not worth it.

At 40K miles I dropped the pan and replaced the filter and fluid, pain in the ass. At 65K I drained the fluid by sucking it out with a pump I bought off of Amazon and then reversed the operation and pumped in the same amount that came out. If they are doing a good job for $166 that is a bargain. The same transmission on GM products have a stand pipe to set the fluid level, I contacted PML and asked them to produce a replacement pan with a stand pipe for the Ford 10R80 which they did. The replacement pan that they sell is $410 and one with the stand pipe is more, I believe you have to call them to get the price. I'll probably purchase one if I'm going to do the flush and fill again as you never know if the trans from the factory had the correct level and tryin to get the trans up to operating temperature and checking it with that little dipstick is next to impossible without burning your hand. My transmission works perfectly and I believe it is due to the frequent fluid changes. As you know the early 10R80s like mine had problems. the link for the new pan is:

I was thinking of doing the same things and suck out the fluid with a pump. I was looking at a couple of pumps on Amazon, which pump did you use ? And how did it work for you? Also how many quarts of fluid did you use ?

Do any of you change your own trans fluid on your GT.

my last was done by the dealer for $166.00, so is it really saving anything doing it yourself?

thanks,
RWP
I do not have a lift that would level all 4 corners... I found a shop that replaced MT for about $60 and my oil.

I got it hot and got fluid to the right level in the A on dip stick then checked it cold and it was low in the B on dipstick so if you check it cold when filling set level in the B no more than half way up and it will be right. Fluid rises about 15 mm on dipstick when hot.

Did that include the filter or did they just pump it out.

I purchased the ARMINE MADE OIL PUMP. It was $23, looks and feels cheap but it worked. You will have to extend the power leads as they will not reach the car battery. I ordered 7 quarts from the dealer at about $9 per quart, I suggest using OEM ford Mercon ULV. I did not use it all and I had a couple of quarts left over. If you can go out and buy more once you start the job you may want to only buy 5 quarts; I would feel safe having 6 on hand. Get a couple of clear 1 gallon containers, like milk jugs, to pump the old fluid into so you can see how much came out. Be extremely careful not to knock them over when draining or adding fluid as you will loose track of how much came out or went in. It was not too difficult to suck it out or pump it back in, since you only change about half the fluid, or less, I'm going to do mine again after 20 or 30K miles. Our transmissions are expensive and the best way to keep them in good health is changing the fluid regularly.

Thanks for the info. I just looked up the pump on Amazon, but it states you can only extract not pump fluid back in. How where you able to pump back in? Did you just use the outlet as the inlet ?

Just pulled the MT82 out of my 2015 GT this morning and the clutch is next. Being replaced with a Mcleod RXT twin disc ceramic and a Calimer stage two transmission, with a Barton short throw shifter.

Nice, what all do you have as far as power adders on the car?

Exactly, just turn it around and pump out of the new trans fluid into the trans. I would pump a little clean fluid through it first to wash it out.

I did mine, getting it level wasn’t the end of the world. But what drove me through the roof was my pump. The one I had the hose was too big to get in very far so too much was spilling out. Then I buy a different one at Autozone, the tube was perfect, but halfway through the bottle the pump portion fell to pieces. So I ran back to Autozone and they only had the same pump and thought maybe it’s a fluke and I got a bad one. So bought the same thing and ran home.

Put the cheap pump on and started again, 3 pumps in and it falls apart…… Took the spring out of the pump and manually worked it and it worked as it should, just not as designed.

I told my wife, I’ve never in my life had so many problems changing trans fluid. She said why didnt you pay someone else to do it…. If I can do it myself, I’m going to do it and do it right.
