At best a set of shorty headers might get you 10rwhp. They just aren't that much better than stock.
Was looking up the results the kooks 1 7\8 shortys from s197s were making every bit of 20 rwhp with stock cats plus a few lbs weight savings

Catted headers technically WILL NOT pass emissions because they are not 50 or even 49 state legal since they have been moved from the OEM location. Now, some tuners, like Lund Racing, can set the tune in such a way that when connected to the scanner for the readiness testing they can get you a "PASS" reading. Some states this cannot be done in, like CA, NY, VA and some others. I'm not sure off the top of my head which states they cannot "trick", but the 3 I listed I know for sure.

The difference with the Kooks Green Cats is that a tune is not needed with those, so you do not have to turn off the rear O2's which will get you a "FAIL" on the readiness test.

You can add NJ to your list as well. After you drive over a camera and they verify you even have cats, they plug into ODBII and check for reediness. If we have the rear O2s "turned off" you fail as they know these system should be operational. Our best bet here is Kooks headers with Green cats and "O2 non-foulers (spacers) between the rear O2's and the pipe. This will usually provide enough heat to not trip the rear sensors but there is no guarantee on 2011+ cars.

NY also works this way as well but I am hearing rumors that they will soon enforce the visual aspect even further. If you have after market exhaust parts and no CARB "soon to just be ARB" sticker they can fail you as well.

It's disappointing to see this but the EPA isn't messing around these days.

What really irks me is there are not longer any safety inspection in NJ. You can roll in with malfunctioning brakes, no rear view or side view mirrors, broken windshield, no headlights ect.. and pass as long as the car shows OBDII readiness. This is Ass backwards IMO...

I am in the same predicament. I live in Northern Virginia, where obdII emissions tests are required every two years to renew registration. I work at a dealership, so I have plenty of techs that don't mind overlooking the visual inspection, BUT rear o2 banks being turned off is an automatic failure. There is no way around it.

If there was someway to add spacers to the sensors that would read ready, and not throw CEL, I would have longtubes yesterday.

I must be lucky that I don't have these kind of inspections here, sounds like a real headache. Yet, I still went with catted headers.

I went with catted to avoid the fuel smell. Plus, the difference in loudness and power is very minimal.
is that so? every dyno ive seen the catted headers make only half of what the catless headers make....no way id spend extra money to make less power.

Ill be doing this. Im not worried about visual inspections for being catless.
