Lately I've noticed that my 2016 GT with 1200 miles will grind into 2nd gear when cold. After it's warm, it's smooth as butter. I know when cold your shifts won't be smooth, but it legit feels like metal grinding only in that gear.

This is my first manual car. Is this normal and is this damaging to the trans?

Just thought about it and realized that it only started in the past month or so, because it finally started getting cold out.

So the real question is, is it normal to have to baby the clutch when cold and to experience some grinding from 1-2 if it's not entirely warmed up or babied?

Mine does the same. Sometimes it'll even pop out of gear. If I double clutch into 2nd, it shifts fine. Only does it when it started getting cold here. It's annoying but I just got used to it

Head on over to your nearest Ford dealer on a cold day, in something other than your Mustang. Then test drive a new Mustang. You might check on the digital display, for cylinder head temp to make sure the car hasn't been driven just before you. If its the same, then its probably the gear oil. If its not the same, then something else.

In either case, don't force or rush the shift

Full synthetic transmission fluid might help with cold weather shifting. Lots of thread about it in the Transmission and Drivetrain forum.

Is it normal of a manual transmission absolutely not! But good luck getting Ford to admit there's any problem. I've had mine in 3 different times, both service managers acknowledged the grind but told me it's normal every mustang does it.

OP said his transmission was good in warm weather, and not as good in cold weather. Low hanging fruit is to check the gear oil. And the easiest way to do that is to test drive a new Mustang that has been sitting out in the cold and see how it compares.

I have to change gears very slowly and diligently when the engine/transmission are cold because the revs drop more slowly than usual, but it never grinds even if I forget to shift delicately.

Mine started doing the same when the temps started dropping, If I let the engine drop to the correct revs on the first shift instead of pushing it, it is smooth. After I have done 2-3 shifts I don't have the problem any more.

This is one big reason why Ford should have included the transmission fluid temperature gauge for the gt! Gt350 has it!

Pretty common on the mt82. Happens in my 13 when it's cold, a quality fluid change may help.

Cold weather increases symptoms for sure. It's still happing in warm weather as well just not as noticeable. I don't understand why everyone is so quick to jump to all these "fixes" for the MT-82. Member after member are stating the exact same issues and failures, yet everyone wants to reinvent the wheel and add shifters, brackets and change gear fluids. Why not make ford fix their faulty engineering? I mean it's not an uncommon problem there's a thread on this forum that's 50+ pages just about the thud and notchy shifting.

check out this thread, posted in Transmissions section. One guy posted a photo of what appears to be a worn / damaged sync (page 2). I think if a gear still grinds during a (slow) upshift during warm weather, then you have a sync issue. Supposedly you can verify this by doing a double clutch.

The next question I have is whether the Tremec 6060 or Tremec Magnum XL can take more abuse than an MT82.

I noticed same grind from 1st to 2nd @500 miles. Thought is was normal but started to notice in all gears especially if I hold on to shift knob. Took the car to the dealer for diagnosis. They first grabbed a brand new car from their showroom to compare and see if noise is normal. They verified that it's not so, they ordered new shift linkage kit with a newly designed boot. Scheduled for install next week, will post results.
