when I was car shopping, I was intrigued that the F150 has an option for Electronic Locking Diff, and that's how I would prefer things. Open diff most of the time, locking diff as needed. Rather than a full time LSD / Torsen.

one my concerns with my new car is that if / when it needs service, without a rev limiter, its a sitting duck for abuse. 6500 RPM clutch dumps / line lock, etc. But if it had an open diff, half the engine torque or less would hit the rear wheels before a tire breaks loose resulting in a one wheel peel. So in the hands of a hot rodder / Ferris Bueller, this would substantially limit drive line / transmission shock. Theoretically.

I don't really plan to push my car much beyond the traction of a single tire, so I feel like an open diff would be better for me.

Sort of an expensive / invasive mod though

Thoughts?

They make electronic lockers or air lockers. It would probably be $1000 though. You could always install one of those but I don't know if a company makes one to fit the super 8.8 yet.

Errrr no. Open diff just break if you are not careful.
Why would you want an open diff on a 435hp car is idiotic.
All S550 comes with limited slip diffs.
Locking diff is terrible for pavement as it does not allow axles to turn at different speeds. It will cause understeer oversteer all kinds of dangerous behavior. The reason why trucks have them is for off-road ability.
If you are so worried about the grease monkey messing with your car, take it to the dealer on a saturaday and wait while they work on your car. Or start doing services yourself.

Locking diffs should only be used in a straight line.

You can set the mykey to limit the abuse the car gets. FYI, an open diff won't stop someone roasting a clutch and just results in worse traction in all but ideal conditions.

nobody cares about your mustang, they aren't going to hot rod it when you get an oil change and having an open diff only means one bald tire if they do. there is no less driveline shock. put down the joint, you're paranoid.

it's not an F12.

I was thinking the open diff was the most rugged of the various options.

In any case, I suffer new car syndrome. I have motored around in a jalopy for many years, with no fear in heavy traffic, nor dropping my car off at the mechanic, etc.

I probably don't NEED 435hp, but you know how it is. Gotta have the 5.0 on the side of the car. Mostly I just wanted enough torque to spin a tire on demand, such as celebrating my departure from my place of work at the end of the day. I am fairly sure a 300hp v6 / MT with an open diff would have got the job done.

Way back yonder, I had an F150 with a v6 (200hp) and MT. I later modded it with LSD and 4.11 gears, just for fun, but I preferred the truck with an open diff. Handled better, more predictable in slick conditions, no wheel hop, etc.

Open diff actually puts more stress on the spider gears instead of the grown gear because you are spinning very fast and the wheel catches rapidly sending torque to the other side of the wheel. The more limited differential spinning, the less stressed is transmitted to the spider gear because it does not need to spin as much.
Did you put LSD or locking differential on your truck because two are completely different things.

There's no issues spinning tires with the LSD and the V6 and EB will also spin tires just fine if that's your thing.

I think the old truck with the LSD is a totally different ball game from today's LSDs. Handling should be improved with the LSD.
