G'day everyone,
I'm awaiting delivery of my 2016 GT manual. Already got the dollars aside for an exhaust, cold air intake and tune.
Over here a custom Dyno tune is over $1,000 and claimed outputs exceed canned tunes which I understand, but the downside is most of the dyno'd custom tunes are locked and my understanding is that I can't use an SCT tuner to return to stock for service / warranty and re-apply the tune after.
Wondering if anyone has any experience with custom tunes? By locked do they mean the tune is locked to the cars computer and can't be reflashed back to stock, or do they mean the tune can't be modified for timing / etc?

If i'm stuck with canned tune only options I've been thinking of Steeda with their lifetime tune package. Any others worth checking out?

A dyno or canned tune is loaded through a hand tuning device and it can be returned to stock unless there's something going on I haven't seen with this new platform. A custom tune on a dyno will produce marginally better power, but not drastic. I wouldn't let anybody custom tune this car without being a highly experienced professional that does it every day.

i'm happy enough so far with my steeda tune (with tunes for life) and intake that cost me $567... i couldn't see spending that kind of money for a dyno tune personally but I'm not out to squeeze every ounce of hp out either.

What do you estimate your HP is at the crank? I have been mulling over the Steeda CAI and tune. Glad to hear your happy with it:cheers:

I canned tune will be significantly more conservative. A custom tune is always better as long as it is by a reputable tuner. Don't cheap out on a tune.

No offence, but who the hell estimates crank horsepower? Doesn't mean shit, it's all about wheel horse power. You can't really say considering some cars start lower/higher than others, but it's a safe guess to say he's gained 30whp and 25-30wtq

What good is returning the car to stock going to do for you? Also perhaps you should put a couple of miles on the car before tuning it. Just to be safe.

every auto manufacturer uses crank hp. every single person that asks about my cars want to know crank hp. not everyone sits on forums reading about people's builds and are stuck on WHP numbers because that's the easiest number to measure in the aftermarket.

my point is, its ok if someone wants to know how much power your engine is making, thats a valid measurement. I mean, I can easily invalidate WHP by simply driving by you as you look for third gear.....;):D

btw, it's offense.

If your worried about the warranty then put about 2000 miles or so in the car with a good amount of hard driving to make sure everything will hold up ok before tuning. In the mean time before the tune n go ahead and get yourself a nice catback to eliminate that choked up exhaust with that suitcase resonator and also get a steeda cold air intake. The steeda cold air has a sleeve inside to run the stock tune, when your ready to tune you can remove the sleeve and gain a great amount of horsepower. You will gain maybe 15 horsepower without the tune without these mods. I dynoed 391 rear wheel hp before the tune with these mods only. Then get yourself a lund tune when your car has some milege from lethalperfornance. You'll be happy you did . good luck man

That "choked up exhaust" only costs a pony or two versus a catback, so unless you feel the need to just make more noise you'll be fine with the OEM setup.

Only headers make a significant improvement when it comes to exhaust on these cars.....

The exhausts on previous models since it was a u.s sold car were much less restrictive and yes a pony or two, this exhaust is extremely restrictive now that it's globally sold to keep it very quiet therefore it adds a decent amount of power throughout the whole power band. The resonator cuts down to 2 inch piping and the mufflers are completely restrictive. There was a test on a brand new 2015 mustang gt swapping out exhaust to magnaflow competition exhaust and it got peak gains of 10 rear wheel no tune at all.

Interesting read, I was more inline with previous poster about minimal gains, but a peak gain of 10 is not bad with no tuning. I would change exhaust just got more rumble so hp gain is a bonus.

A custom tune is definitely the way to go. They evolve where a canned tune pretty much stays the same from the time it's made. One tune for everyone.

The custom tune is continually updated with new features as time goes on. You also don't need a dyno tune. We can provide you a Lund Racing tune which I can say with confidence will be better than 90% of the dyno tunes you'll be able to get out there. Most of your local tuners have minimal experience with these cars. Why give them a shot at using your car to learn about tuning the S550? Wouldn't you rather want to receive a tune from a reputable tuner who has vast experience with your platform and has tuned 100's of S550's? In addition when ordering a custom Lund Racing tune through us you can have your datalogs reviewed for free. From that your tune can be even more dialed in for your specific car and it's mods.

We've got a sick promotion coming up during our 12 days of Christmas sale on Lund Racing tunes and their Ngauge you won't want to miss. Details get announced on Friday.

Let me know if you have any other questions in the meantime.

Thanks, Jared
