Questioning my purchase of a 2016 Camaro

Hi all,

I recently ordered a Camaro to be built in December, and am thinking about just getting a mustang instead. It's what I was originally looking at, after all.

I love the way the front of the camaro looks, but the rear is terrible. It's reallllllllly bad. The price for all of the crap I want also puts me at 46k BEFORE taxes.

The new incentives introduced by ford (Friends and Neighbors thing) really has me thinking about just getting a mustang. If some of you follow the camaro forums(you know the ones I'm talking about) a bunch of cars built in October have been sitting in the plant's lot for 35+ days for a QC issue.. not good. Doesn't exactly inspire confidence, nevermind the fact that their third party logistics is really bad. It's taking forever to get these things.

A few questions:

1) Should I want to mod, will using the A6 transmission limit me? If so how?

2) Can you mod a 2015/16 mustang to perform at the drag just as well as a stock Camaro? How easy is it mod for mod for them to catch up? Is it really just an innate loss of power that will always be a hindrance on getting better quarter mile and 0-60 times?

3) How bad is the panel misalignment that I keep reading about with regard to mustangs, including the 2016 version? Read a lot of reports about huge gaps on one side of the trunk, etc.

4) Is there any issue with the new IRS? I have read some people are having issues with it, on this forum. I can't cite specifics and am sorry for that but if you know what I am talking about please comment..

5) Is the new generation really slower than the previous?

6) I googled this but can't find an answer... how much more does the convertible weigh? I would be getting a GT Premium.

Anyway this is in no way a versus thread, more of a finance issue and a few questions I need to clear up. The 10k+ premium I'll be paying for the Camaro is just a ton of money. I actually like the Camaro's tech in the interior better (digital spedometer, HUD, etc) but good grief it is so expensive for a car that historically does not hold value well. I am wondering if both the mustang AND the camaro will start to hold value better now that there is a renaissance of sorts in the muscle car world.

Your probably not going to get an unbiased opinion here, after all it is a s550 forum. i would say if going to keep it stock just get the camaro and enjoy it.If you want to modify it buy the mustang. As far as your question about being able to modify a mustang to out preform the camaro, well obliviously it can be done. I am in my car a total of $40k and will destroy the new camaro. Half shafts are the weak point in irs, $1100 fix with dss. Body panel misalignment is hit and miss, did not know it was even an issue in 2016s.

Thanks for the info! I am aware there will be some bias but that is fine, because I would experience the same on the other forum. I've been crawling and reading that place for months and am just looking for more opinions, as well as answers to those questions... thanks again

I'll touch up on some of those I can answer just from being around since I've purchased mine.

2) Indeed. People are hitting great times with minimal modifications, check out the 1/4 mile thread on here. I want to say I've seen auto cars in the high 11s with a tire/tune.

3) My car was an earlier production and just fine. It appears that the panel gap scare was random but in my mind, overblown. Go to a local lot and check out some of them that are at the dealer.

4) IRS is fine. Only thing is that the manual cars like to snap the half-shafts, and some automatics from what I hear but minimal amounts.

I did a front end comparison..........Mustang is pure sexy, Camaro not so much.

Its really a simple matter of which car you like better. The performance of the Camaro is nice, but that interior looks horrible and the exterior is even worse. What an ugly SOB of a car!

If it's a financial decision, then go with the cheaper one. Both will put a smile on your face, but one can do it for less. Just don't buy either one and in 6 months regret it and buy the other as that would be a poor financial choice.

The A6 isn't far off speed wise from the Camaro. All the tests I've seen are the 8spd Camero Vs the M6 which is slower then the A6. I'm going out on a limb here but the Mustang with a intake and tune might beat the Camaro. As far as modding goes I've read of guys running stock A6 into the 10's with stock half shafts.

I've never been a domestic car fan and this is my first domestic car. I thought about both but I liked the styling and looks of the mustang better. Most people wont drive either car to their peak so the numbers are purely for bench racers

The A6 will handle 800HP and 590ftlbs no problem. Can't say the same with the A8 on the Camaro.
After all, which one you prefer driving is the key.

What I would say is that $10k price difference worth it? Are those extra things you prefer about the Camaro what you really need/want? Lighter, faster, more tech, etc....or will that extra $10k you save, be used to make the Mustang the way you want it. Also, I would assume that more than likely, you will be modding the Camaro too. So that will be more $$$ added to that $10k.

I waited to see what the 16 Camaro had to offer. For me the biggest issue was the looks. I just couldn't justify the extra 20hp/55tq, lighter, more tech, etc... being more important than having to look at it everday I drive it and not be happy with it. I am totally satisfied with my choice, but I am not using it at the drag strip. I don't mind the difference in hp/tq, and I was coming from a Supercharged 2006 Pontiac GTO with 500hp to the wheels.

As far as panel alignment, my 2016 is not PERFECT, but it is definitely not horrible. I have a small alignment issue where the front of the hood meets the front passenger fender. The rear windshield is a tad lower on one side. I wouldn't have noticed it if I didn't hear about the issue here on this forum. Everything else is fine so far.

In the end, you need to justify the WANTS over the NEEDS and figure out the $$$ differences. Good luck with your choice, both are great cars, but to me they are 2 different kinds of cars.
