It's not really that much difference maybe 1%. I dont think they would change to lower viscosity just to save that one 1% risking reliability if they didn't test it.

They most certainly do. 1% makes a very noticeable difference in overall corporate fuel economy numbers that must be meet for government compliance.

They also test the hell out of it to make sure it meets the MINIMUM durability requirements. There are other oils that would exceed the min durability requirements at the expense of the min economy requirements.

Having been an engineer for the past 40 years engineering is all about compromise. As an engineer my job is to make compromises to meet the requirements set by the business development folks.

I'm guessing this is why performance pack cars don't come filled with 5w50 any longer...especially since the Mustang is global now.

I don't use Mobil 1, but that sure sounds like a fairly ignorant statement to make since many of the world's high performance cars come O.E. with Mobil 1.

If you're in the mild coastal areas, buy any of the top-tier premium full synthetic oils. If you're in the PalmDesert area of high summer temperatures, I would use Royal Purple because it runs a bit cooler. And if you're modding your engine, I would suggest you pay more attention to change intervals and oil temperatures. Premium full synthetic oils are very cheap "insurance" for your Stang. Don't "hamstring" your Pony with cheap mods or cheap oil...she'll come up lame I tell ya...
