The cars your really see snapping axles are the manual cars. The auto's are easier on launch due to not just dropping the clutch

I wonder if 3.31 gears are easier on the axles then 3.73s
Gears are - by definition - a torque multiplier. More torque = more stress on drivetrain components.

Lol well still going to buy some radials and leave them in the storage shed until I upgrade my axles. Thanks guys... It's not my DD, but I would tlrather save the embarrassment at the track

Drag radials don't belong on a manual car at the drag strip anyway. Further, you don't just dump the clutch on drag radials. If you're going to use a radial on a stick car, you have to ride the fuck out of the clutch. Something, somewhere needs to slip. So either use a bias ply, or ride the clutch.

IRS is new to Ford, so quite a few people have some learning to do. GM guys have been at it for about 10 years starting with the GTO.

I totally disagree. There are many people, me included who are running drag radials on a manual. I have made quite a few passes on a well prepped track.You just have to be smart about it. You can't side step the clutch at 6k and expect something not to give. A quick slip of the clutch should preload the drive train and handle more power than people are stating. With that being said, I did pick up an extra set of stock half shafts as a backup.

To be fair the 10.10 car was an Automatic which doesn't shock the drivetrain anywhere near as hard as a manual.

A friend of mine snapped a halfshaft on his manual 15 at Norwalk this summer; stock with drag radials.

It did wheel hop for a sec and that was it. I don't think you can always get out of a wheel hop situation instantly every time.

If it was me I would just probably just wing it and replace it if it broke and I could get it flatbedded back to my house for free. :D

Wheel hop causes a massive torque hit. Some times several times a second.
The drive line through to the tire loads, the wheel hops unloading and allowing slack for the lack of a better term to return. Then fractions of a second later the wheel lands along with what ever momentum the spinning wheel accrues and drive line torque. Cycle repeats.

Drive line, under wheel how is likely to experience more severe loads under wheel hop, all other factors being equal.

The Point you missed is it is TORQUE which overloads the axel and snaps it, Torque from the shock of the unload and subsequent reload of the shaft, not engine torque.
Is this where I now throw an insult at you?? Like I said...I am new here, Not new to cars. I broke my first half shaft in 1978. Wheel hop did it. Not engine torque, the torque from the energy released/increased during wheel hop.

Reducing wheel hop will reduce the likelihood of snapping the axel/half shaft...to a point. Street driving and some tracks because of surface issues will induce wheel hop. A stronger axel/half shaft is the only cure assuming the gear can hold the strain. Yea, I broke gears and carriers also.

In the late 70's and early 80's several companies were trying to develop a bulletproof IRS for the C-3 vette. That's what I broke in 1978...A lot. There was some success and a lot of snake oil.
Bottom line, If you are going to play, you have to strengthen the IRS components to a point where they can handle the torque associated with the Wheelhop. Otherwise its just a matter of when.

I'm not sure why you tried to give your scientific explanation on what wheel hop is! I'm also not sure why your trying to give me a history lesson on IRS:shrug: for the record. I'm probably about the same age as you and remember when IRS was a big deal. It was a long time ago. Now to get back on point. Op why replace the stock axles if their not broke? If you want to run drag radials just stash a little money in the piggy bank in case one does break.

We recently snapped a driver side half shaft in one of our PP GT cars.

Stock power level...with full BMR Suspension, and MT Drag Radials.

No Wheel Hop. Power/traction/shock load were the culprit.
