Hi, all. Newbie here. I'm in the market for a 2016 Mustang V6 with manual transmission and a bunch of the available upgrades, but my first experience trying to buy from my local dealer in CT. was very disheartening. He wouldn't budge off that "friends and neighbors" pricing. No discussion. No haggling. No negotiating. Nothing. What's up with that?

The car needs to be ordered, because there are no V6s in the entire Northeast inventory with all the options I want, such as upgraded LSD with manual trans, parking sensors, security package and a couple of other goodies. The dealer invoice would be about $24,900, according to this forum, and the dealer offered about $26,700, not including labor on two dealer-installed options (interior light package and sports pedals).

It's been about 20 years since I bought a new car, but what happened to the good ol' days when you could haggle with a dealer. Did I just get unlucky with this dealer? Anyone have any insight into buying a new Mustang? (And yes, I did read some other threads here, but it didn't really discuss this new "friends and neighbors" pricing and whether it was negotiable.

Any help very much appreciated! Thanks.

I used the x-plan pricing. It is very easy to get.

Hmm. Be prepared for many responses, but you can find them all previously in searching other threads in the Pricing section.

My short-form advice is two things. 1) Everything is based on invoice pricing these days. Easy to find out exact invoice prices. 2) Yes, you can haggle, but that depends on many, many factors: region, stock levels, # of dealers, time of year, incentives, etc.

Start by signing up with TruCar and Costco. Shop by email and phone. Only go to dealers for test drives, and spread those around the dealers. When you are ready to order, (nicely) pit all the regional dealers against each other (and again only by phone or email). "Can you beat your competitor's quote of $X?"

Good luck. Knowledge, perserverance, and timing will save you money.

Sorry, here is the link in regards to x-plan pricing.

After you get setup to get the pin, just tell the dealer that you want to buy with car with the x-plan. If they give you a hard time, go to another dealer. Mine was the smoothest car buying experience ever.

Just wait for the "friends and neighbors" sale to be over then negotiate all you want :D

Sounds like a pretty good deal they are giving so I would not blame them. Try another dealer but you may get the same response.

I went in with the x-plan and after the dealer said "this price is better the the x-plan" it was game on and I ended up doing a bit better. I go in with the wife and we work as a team. I have purchased many cars and trucks in my lifetime and I/we do pretty good.

The trick is to pick the right dealer. I have a dealer two minutes from my house and have tried buying many vehicles from them and they just do not deal. Pick a high volume dealer that has great reviews. Do your homework and know what the invoice is going in and the most you want to pay and don't budge. Leave if you must, they will call back.

I didn't use any x-plan when I bought my gt. my dealer was just super easy to work with... They gave me $5000 off sticker price, I would look at a couple other dealers first and see what they say

I too ended up using X plan on my base EBM.. The price I got was less than what True Car showed.. AND I got the $500 customer cash on top of that + the dealer waived the $600 dealer fee which was in addition to the True Car price.

Best part is that it's absolutely zero hassle.. X Plan is X Plan, no bs-ing or fudging numbers. You may be able to haggle below X Plan but I was satisfied with the price so I went for it.

The important thing to keep in mind is that X Plan is separate from any promotions or rebates.. a lot of times True Car or internet prices or even Dealer tags indicate prices with a bunch of promotions that you may not qualify for.. Any cash back rebates or finance deals you are eligible for are in addition to the X Plan discount which could get you a great deal if you shop at the right time. I sure as hell wish I would of gotten 0% for 60 months on a 2015 Lol..

you can beat xplan(by alot) and friends and family gimmick, you just need to shop around. A dealer also is hardly going to deal on an ordered car.

There's not a lot of wiggle room on price, maybe 1500 or so, as far as base pricing. However, the 'deals' come when adding options. Options provide much more room for discounts. I have the X-plan pricing and when you look at available inventories, that's where the main difference is.

Yeah, I priced out a car with the current F&F incentive - hesitantly I might add - I was concerned I'd feel the burn, but I was a good $4000 less than that pricing. :headbang:

I bought way out of state (so did have to factor in transport), the dealer was mediocre (bad/slow communication), but it was the exact car I wanted and since it's a convertible, dealers up north are looking to get them off their lot ASAP.

$42,665 + TTT + transport - $1000 post tax rebates, for a car with right at a $49K retail price.

You can also go to Ford.com and sign up to receive brochures and emails from them. I signed up about 6 different email accounts and finally got a $750 "coupon" to use on my purchase. My understanding is that if you go with the x-plan you will get this $750 off the x-plan price PLUS any other incentives that are going on at that time.

Many thanks for the responses. But one thing I don't understand: Is the X-Plan pricing calculation based on the "dealer" invoice or the "MSRP" invoice? There's a big difference, of course. All the threads I've read just say subtract .04 from the "invoice" then add $275 dealer fee. Which invoice?

Thanks.

I did way better than x-plan or F&F. Go to TrueCar, pick the dealer in your area with the best price, print the offer & use it to shop the others (if you don't like the lowest price place for some reason). I ended up 70 miles from home, but saved > $2k over what the local dealer was quoting.

Totally off topic: do you own a Superbird?
