I've been seeing this topic pop up in and around other threads and after reading through them all...I figured it would be nice to stick all of the back and forth in one thread.

So.

Let loose!

It's an interesting topic I'd love to hear folks debate. Lots say Synchros eliminated the need.

The arguments for using it to get the intermediate shafts to speed are very interesting, and with all of the strange issues folks seem to have with the MT82, it's warrants a genuine discussion I think.

Just driving around today I figured I'd give it an entire session of DC only shifting...and even at speed, other than getting used to the timing differences...a lot of the notchy cold shifts were markedly improved. This IMO lending clout to the idea we still need to DC as our Synchros are lazy.

What say you?

My synchros are fine all the way to 7k rpm's. It sucks that some transmissions are having this issue. Chinese inconsistency I guess.

For years, I drove a couple of rally cars that had fragile gearboxes and got in the habit of double clutching as a means of treating them gently, even under competition conditions. I did that so long that I still find myself doing it about half the time in my Mustang. Double clutching will extend the life of the syncros and pretty much eliminate harsh shock loads on the gearsets - but it does offset that with twice as many clutch engagements. Still, the clutch is an easier part to replace...

Why are we even talking about double clutching when is not necesary in todays cars? DC is only used on old transm that doesn't have syncros.

I double clutch because:
1) it's fun
2) it makes smoother gear changes
3) it saves the synchro (and yes I like the idea of saving it, even though it is designed for its task)
4) it's fun, yeah!

Not to mention that it can be extremely satisfying when done right...

Exactly, the challenge of driving a M/T smoothly is a big part of the Mustang's appeal for me. If I wanted easy, I would have got an auto.

Still working on the heel and toe...

I double clutch about 70% of the time. It comes from racing experience. It also is more satisfying than Rev matching. I like knowing I can do it like the pros, plus a perfectly hit DC feels right and sounds amazing.

It's not necessary but it is very rewarding. I laugh at Rev match guys who bicker and say they won't do it cuz it's not necessary. I say their feet aren't fast enough :)

It is satisfying in the way that mastering and executing any skill is. It is satisfying in that it is a skill that leads to a higher level of car control. It is satisfying in that it contributes to one more level of driving a car and having it do exactly what you want it to. Can you be satisfied driving a Mustang without it? Sure. But if you can develop skills that make you all the better of a performance driver, wouldn't you? If that makes sense to you, great. If you don't get that and all you think of are F&F references, well, that's on you...

Double-clutching does seem to help smooth things out when the car is cold. I've been double-clutch up-shifting until the car is warmed up - and before any hard driving. It's a whole different transmission when it's warm.

Double clutching is for sissymarys. Real men triple clutch.
