I have an auto equipped with 3.55 gears. Running from a dig is a breeze, but I’ve encountered a bit of an issue when a few of my manual 5.0 owning friends wanted to try a few runs from a 40 roll after losing to me from digs while we were down on a closed course in Mexico.:ninja:

While I have the transmission in drive, simply flooring it results in a split second or two of lag from the transmission before it downshifts, so they’d always get the jump. I’m aware that I could shift the transmission down to S to have complete control of what RPM I take off from, but I’d rather not use the paddle shifters to upshift.

You can use the paddle shifters to select your gear while in D, but the transmission will only stay in that gear for a few seconds before returning to auto mode. The best method I found was keeping the transmission in D and waiting for the first honk. Then I’d quickly shift down into the gear I wanted, by the time the third honk came around I’d be ready to take off, so I would get the launch I wanted, and then the transmission would return to auto mode.

I just thought I’d chime in and see if any of you other auto guys had any different methods on running from a roll. Lately I’ve been looking into a Lund Racing tune, would that help the delayed throttle response while in D at all?

Racing from a roll is lame however, try SPORT + there is less lag than there is in D.

Why don't you want to use the paddle shifters?

put trans in S downshift to appropriate gear, floor it to start race and immediately bump shifter into D and let the trans take over. OR while keeping trans in D use paddle shifter to downshift, floor it to start race and do nothing else, car will shift on its own.

Been wondering about that myself...Guys around here do mostly 40 MPH roll ons ..I was thinking just leave it in drive and punch it on the second honk .. I have the Lund tune in mine and it will NOT shift at full throttle in S , you have to use the paddles ..Kind of sucks because it didn't work that way with the stock tune .. I asked Jon about it and he had no clue why it would do that in S.. I found out the hard way at the track , I staged with the car in S and hit the limiter in first and it never shifted .. Funny it will shift on it's own in S at light throttle but not at full throttle ...

So what I tried from a 40 roll with the Lund tune was to put it in S ... well that didn't work because at light throttle getting up to 40 MPH it would shift to 3 , so I would have to use the paddle to go back to 2 but it will only stay there for a short time and then back to 3rd ... So the only way I can do the 40 roll is in drive and let the trans kick back down when I floor it .. The down shift is slow even with the lund tune , so leave on the second honk .. Good part is my shifts in Drive with the Lund tune are very very hard and the shift point is 7200 even in drive for ,3,4,5 shift ... First to second gear shifts at 7000 ..all the rest of the gear 7200 ..

Yours doesn't shift if you haven't touched anything after putting it in S ? I've run the track and it's shifted on its own. I've seen you run some pretty nice times, are you just in D on those?

I've noticed the same thing, try a 50mph hit and see how it responds.

Alternatively you could put the transmission in "S" mode, select via paddleshifters what gear you want to be in based on your current speed, and when you both go wide open throttle about a second or two into it push the shifter into D. This should keep the gear you want and still allow the car to shift how its programmed to.

Also, do you have a tune? If so, from who?

Mine would shift on it's own in S BEFORE the Lund tune .. Now with the LUND tune it will not shift at wide open throttle in S .. I do not touch the paddles , I just pop in S ... So now I just leave it in Drive and it shifts very hard with the Lund tune ..Shift points are 7k in first and the rest of the gears it shift at 7200 ..

I guess it's not a big deal but seems odd, mine has worked the same way before and after the Lund tune in S mode at the track and street.

It's not lame. Dig races are great when you have stock power. Once you're in the 500+ wheel range, hooking on the street dd doesnt happen. Going from a roll also saves the car from a pounding trying to lauch it properly.

Racing a 500+ car on the street is idiotic period. However that has been beaten to death and I don't want to get into that argument anymore. Do what you like.
