Wipple tune

Finally made the decision and went for the Whipple SC. It will need 4 weeks before shipping. I Opted for black finish and the electric fans, skipping on both custom finish and the 132mm throttle. The kit also comes with a tune, standard part of the kit that could be deleted.

as I understood form the guys at Whipple, a tuner device (not sure what make they use) isn't ready at the moment. So I'll have to take the ECU out and ship it to them for the tune, à la Roush.

If those running Whipple in the forum, could kindly share how the tuning procedure went, is it custom tuneable after being tuned by Whipple, or did you have it custom tuned from the start!

Congrats and welcome to the Whipple club.

Your PCM gets shipped to Whipple at the start of your install and will be back to you in a few days. Plug it back in and away you go.

If you ever side to get it custom tuned you have two options.

1. Send PCM back to Whipple and they will return it back to a factory program and send it back. Now you take it to be tuned.

2. Ford dealers should be able to return the PCM back to stock.

I've had both and I prefer Whipples tune. It is NOT to be confused with a "can" tune. Hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars went into making this tune. And it is a work in progress meaning as it gets improved you can send in your PCM in for the update. Kinda like Apple in the way that you will be able to get upgrades in the future.

I have seen posts of custom tunes on this forum and they are all very close to the tune I have via Whipple. Ones with more hp are more aggressive that's all. How can you go wrong with 670 wrhp out of the box (roughly 778 crank)? I believe there is a new tune in the works that will release more hp as well.

Nothing wrong with custom tunes either. I don't meant to imply that.

Whipple and Roush use a similar tuning process that encrypts/locks/etc the PCM.

You have to go back to stock in order to have a generic tuning device tune the PCM.

I was looking forward to use the Whipple tune as a base for a custom one. I not sure what to expect from cutom tuning stock PCM!
Whipple did say that they are working on a tuner that might be available by the time my supercharger is shipped, it would be great if there tuner could be updated with future tunes.

Too inconvenient IMO. If I want to go back to stock tune, I want to plug my tuner up immediately and do it. Not have to ship my PCM off. Sorry

Whipple and Roush have access to basically the same tuning process as the OEM. Generic tuners cannot manipulate as much of the PCM as they can.

I would prefer to use one of their tunes as a base as well.

The tune, as is Roush and FRPP's is encrypted and would be extremely hard to decrypt. The reason is, in the past, many aftermarket companies used that tune, with some small changes to build there kit. Other than Roush/FRPP, we have spent massive resources testing and validating where other aftermarket companies have not (at least not to this level).

While others maybe able to get one running well, the level of detail and ingenuity that goes into one of these cal's far exceeds others. We understand many don't care about this, they just want to hit the throttle. But just the mere fact of detonation and knock control logic. We spent a lot of money recalibrating it since the factory system had never been calibrated at the load and knock intensity levels. Just this alone is something others at the aftermarket level can't even really calibrate properly. You can just trial and error.

We also have the ability to run the IC pump and auxiliary fans via the PCM, with diagnostics to help if one has an issue. RPM based therefore the fan's don't roar when you unlock the door or shut the car off...

We have the ability to run the IAT 2 sensor, therefore we have the proper offset between IAT1 and IAT2, just like the Ecoboost and the other supercharged vehicles of the past.

There are hundreds of these examples and for this reason, it has to be locked. While some may say they would never use it, studies have shown that's not true.

Guys like Lund, American Muscle and others have come up with great custom tunes, therefore they should be used when getting outside the window of what we offer.

I'm currently trying to make the decision of what tune I want to go with also and was just wondering if I go with the whipple tune to start with and later decide to go with custom tuning do you charge to reprogram the computer back to stock?

Yes, it's very simple via an IDS tool or you can send to us to do.

With Lund and nGauge, I believe they can flash over the Whipple tune, and the Whipple tune will be stored as the back-to-stock tune. That is what I was recently explained by Lund when I asked if I needed to revert my ECU to stock first... but we have not actually done it yet to confirm.

I'm like you tho I'd love to be able to keep the whipple tune as the back to stock tune if I ever wanted to go back to 93 vs e85.

Before the nGauge was out, I remember that Lund told me I needed to have the ECU reverted before they could tune it. I dont know if the nGauge is the difference, or if something else has changed, or if it was a misunderstanding and I still have to revert first. I will post about the process in my build thread -when it occurs. Probably be 7-10 days before I try and put in the Lund startup tune.

I would go with the Whipple tune. You won't be disappointed. I am the worlds fussiest when it comes to drivability and their tune is spot on, makes awesome power and drives like a factory car.....
