Have any of you installed this hood scoop yourselves just yet? I just received mine and I really like the way it looks from pictures online; however, I'm heavily contemplating on whether or not I should actually wait all the way until next Thursday to have a shop install it for me, which will be approx $150 or so in labor.

According to Late Model Restoration's video, they mention that the template "guarantees" accurate placement. However, I know that some people's interpretation of "easy" could mean a whole different thing to a person who's never done anything like it before. I love assembling things revolving things inside the house, but I've never tried anything for a car :p.

So my questions are:

  1. Is this considered easy for a person who's never done anything like it before?
  2. How much would a hood replacement cost if I actually did screw anything up?

Any tips would be greatly appreciated. It just sucks walking past my hood scoop every day on the floor waiting for installation, and plus doing it myself could save me $150+. Just not sure if it's worth it or if it's something that you just can't mess up unless you don't follow directions.

Installation instructions:

1) Remove hood scoop from box
2) Place in trash can

But really, what type of mounting is it? Drill holes, or just tape?
Lol. Why is there so much hate for the hood scoops? I know it doesn't do anything for its performance, but what's the big deal about this? I've seen others that were actually serious about hating it, lol :p.

It requires drilling holes.

I had installed the Roush Hood Scoop on my 2013 and the instructions and template were spot on. Installation could not have been any easier. I was terrified when it came to the drilling portion and was very worried about getting the alignment just right, but i took my time, read carefully, and trusted in their development. And it all worked out flawlessly. With the install on the 2015, I foresee it being even easier when it comes to lining up the template, due to the scoop sitting perfectly in-between the natural body lines in the hood.

Do yourself a huge favor and do this install yourself. Take your time and you'll be fine.

Good Luck!

Thanks a lot for this feedback! Really glad to hear this and most likely going to go for it myself in a few hours. Much appreciated!

You are very welcome. Save your money and enjoy the experience!

There's a sense of pride that will come in knowing that you did it yourself.

Pretty much most of the hate comes from the function over form people, who see it as a: well if it doesn't actually do anything, why is it there?

I really wish there was a purpose for the Roush one, since I like the way it looks a lot, but the engineer in me would always be bothered by the fact that it's a functionally useless fake hole... and then I go and spend my money on racing stripes :p

It wasn't hard, the only hard part was bringing myself to making the first hole. Then after that there's no going back. Just make sure you use a nice big blanket, and you may want to keep a vacuum with a hose nearby because there will be a LOT of metal shavings.

+1 to this.

I covered the engine with a blanket and had someone holding a vacuum next to the drill bit as I worked my way around. And do NOT wipe off anything on your hood when you're done. Hit it up with a leaf blower or something. Even the smallest of metal shavings can cause huge scratches or terrible swirl marks. Wait a few days as well before the car gets wet, it allows the adhesive to really bond well.

Never did the hood scoop but have been around truck hitches and accessories. Want to be really careful of those chips, not only do they scratch paint but if you blow them all over driveway or garage and walk through barefoot it is a pain to get them out. I would also think you would want really sharp/ new drill bits so to drill through without possibility distorting the hood, and of course be careful of drill punching through and hitting engine or whatever.

measure 3 x, drill 1 x

use lots of blue tape to ensure you dont scratch the paint. Use sharp drill bits so they dont "walk" when you start to drill.

And measure a 4th time just to be sure.

Scoop issues

It is bolted down, with 10 bolts.
The only thing that I can think is that the scoop was originally manufactured flat and they molded it to the curvature of the hood later. When it cools down it pulls up off the hood on the corners where there are no bolts. I have installed 3 of them, they all did the same thing. I finally removed all the tape so when it flexes up its less noticeable
