Hmm...you're #s are off in in the MPG.

GT is 19 combined. V6 is 22 combined. You have a 9 mpg difference (not sure where you are getting that from.)

Also, you can run regular in both without any issues. You save there also.

Obviously insurance is different for everyone. My insurance there is no difference between a GT or V6 or EB. All are insured the same.
I agree about the mileage. I was speculating. I thought the V6 would be better. At $3/gal., I might be underestimating the gas cost. Many insurers increase premiums for larger engines, and the GT, especially for new clients and younger drivers.

It would be a wash with fuel economy between the V6/EB...V6 runs on 87. EB runs on 93 (for the power). EB 25 combined, V6 22 combined. The difference in price of fuel would then basically negate any fuel savings between the two models and in fact, the V6 running regular would come out ahead of the EB actually for $$$ spent for fill up by 21 gallons. (15 gallon fill up in EB vs 18 gallons in V6 for same cost of premium vs regular). EB would get 375 miles where the V6 would actually get 396 (330+66 addtional miles for extra saved fuel costs vs premium) if you took an average of .50 cent difference in premium vs reg..

Now torque is a whole other thing and available mods.
So, it's actually really hard to find 93 where I live. 87-91 is standard. Occasional 94 at a station in the suburbs.

Smiles per miles or smiles elsewhere.
OppoLock? Wait, OppoLock from Jalopnik? Cool. I suppose I should figure out if my life is my car, or if I want to be young and do all the things I can't do when I'm older.

if I wasn't getting a GT it would be and EB because it has and available performance pack and recaros and unlike the v6 modifications and tuning have a ton of potential
Sadly, the sound is what kills the boost for me. For the longest time I wasn't a fan of turbos, but that's minimal to being reminded of the compact I drive right now.

If to do were as easy as to know what were good to do, chapels had been churches and poor mens cottages, prince's palaces.

These are the ways the GT costs more than a V6, assuming a base GT and approximate mileage (I don't really know the V6 or GT mileage):

$8000 MSRP
$560 additional sales tax (7%)
$800 add'l interst on 5 year loan @3% apr.
$300 premium vs regular gas cost/yr. (@.45/gal add'l. x 12,000 miles &18 mpg), (5 years=$1500)
$2000 additional mpg differential cost, assuming $3/gal., 18 vs. 27 mpg, 12K mile/yr. (5 years=$10000)
$1,500 insurance/yr. (5 yr.= $7,500)

Your actual costs may vary depending upon your driving habits.

True, I need to work that out. Insurance is killer. A V6 costs me ~250 a month in this area. A GT costs me near ~400 something a month. Getting less than ~180 a month in this area is unheard for anybody.

there are quite a number of other cars out there besides the mustang you know... if cost is an issue, look elsewhere.
In my view, Mustang or nothing. I rode in a Fox body when I was a kid and I've wanted a Mustang ever since. If not, at the very least a Ford.

Do you absolutely need a new car? Can you wait a year or two and pick up a nice used one? Seems that might be a reasonable option....
End of the year, if I really push the car I have and it doesn't break down again. At this rate my current car is costing me more than a new car would, all together, due to unexpected maintenance. I'm lucky to make it a year without $3K worth of work.

Nah, I just stole that name. I like me some oversteer and the name kind of implies that. :)

Yah I was just saying that the GT vs V6 gas thing...both can run regular just fine, GT only loses a few HP that you'll never notice in DD, so gas cost shouldn't be factored in terms of Reg vs Prem unless you plan on doing that. I remember reading about this and them basically saying it's just not even necessary unless your engine absolutely requires it (like an Audi does) or is designed for premium to increase a boost in HP (like a Turbo engine).

http://www.caranddriver.com/features/regular-or-premium
Our tests confirm that for most cars there is no compelling reason to buy more expensive fuel than the factory recommends, as any performance gain realized will surely be far less than the percentage hike in price. Cheapskates burning regular in cars designed to run on premium fuel can expect to trim performance by about the same percent they save at the pump. If the car is sufficiently new and sophisticated, it may not suffer any ill effects, but all such skinflints should be ready to switch back to premium at the first sign of knock or other drivability woes. And finally, if a car calibrated for regular fuel begins to knock on anything less than premium or midgrade, owners should invest in a tuneup, emissions-control-system repair, or detergent additives to solve, rather than bandage, the root problem. Class dismissed.

* Snip
The calibration for the engine in these cars uses the knock sensor(s) to adjust the operating characteristics to maintain a point on the threshold of spark knock. By running 93 octane these parameters are elevated. Some drivers can feel the difference in everyday operation and others cannot.

The differences between 87 and 93 are more pronounced in a forced induction engine due to the higher pressures in the cylinders and elevated temperatures contributing to earlier spark knock thresholds. 93 octane in the Ecoboost will have a more noticeable affect on the 'seat of the pants dyno.'

To save OP time, the GT sucks, just join the V6/Eco master race.

After reading through the responses so far, I notice a lot of you only live once, get something you won't regret type of advice. I know many people that have followed this, only to find that they regret the cost to other aspects of their life. If you are young(ish) it's wise to live within your means, so that when you're old(ish) you can continue living within your means.

Think about that final day when you look back at your life, what would you like to say: "it was a good value" or "I got the best I could". We aren't here forever, if you want the GT, get it!

Well, my above post is with the assumption that the OP CAN afford the GT and the question is whether it is worth to spend the extra money. No one should spend retirement savings on a car indeed...

Grandma always had good advice for me... Live your life to the fullest everyday, and assume your life will be long; otherwise you'll be unable to live it the fullest everyday. Grandparents know things - been there, done that.

dont be boring. live a little. it's just a car, it's not like you're marrying it. if you cant afford it, sell it, then get a boring econobox like a corolla or something. jeez it's not the end of the world if you figure out you bit off more than you can chew.

Hi guys.

The Mustang is my dream car, and the moment I saw the S550 I knew the time had come to achieve said dream. But right now, I'm split between the V6 and the GT.

There's something to be said about owning a GT. It's the penultimate Mustang. It's what I feel a Mustang should be. I like all the little luxuries. I'm a techie, so I like the features in the Premium model. I drive 100 miles a day and after driving an Escape for some of those commutes... I've learned to value how a car handles and drives. So the GT hits those points real nice.

But then there's the other side of me. I grew up poor, and I was grateful to have parents who always put food on the table. The side effect of this is I hate having debt, or spending more money than I should on something else. So I can swallow the cost of a base V6 better than spending an additional $10-20K on a GT model. I can justify $215 a month more easily than $600. I can afford a GT comfortably if I wait a couple of months, but the price tag still gives me a heart attack.

The V6 has fuel costs, insurance, and driving environment (city) going for it. The GT has premium options, performance features, and fun factor. I'm heavily leaning towards the V6 as it makes the most sense and makes it much easier for me to buy a nicer home down the line. But whenever I sit in my friend's California Special... I wonder if that extra money is worth it. I've driven both and the V6 and GT both hit the spot, so that makes it even harder.

What would you do?
Wrestling with this too. If there was 300hp option with leather and a torque curve that didn't fall off a cliff at 5k, I'd say buy that one.
But theres not.
Guess I have to live with 430hp. :frusty:

Aw. Dang it.

After reading through the responses so far, I notice a lot of you only live once, get something you won't regret type of advice. I think for me, it's finding that balance. I work with a lot of people who see a car as an appliance and are surprised I'm buying new, let alone a Mustang. Yet at the other end are guys who grew up working on engines, or on the track. It seems like I just have to sleep on it and find where I fit in there, with what I want out of my 20s.

"penultimate"...hold on, let me bust out the Webster.
I was watching a lot of Top Gear that day, a little too much in retrospect.

Think about that final day when you look back at your life, what would you like to say: "it was a good value" or "I got the best I could". We aren't here forever, if you want the GT, get it!
You see, the thing with the V6 is it's the baseline model. I drive a baseline import right now, and I curse every day that the previous owner didn't spring for power... well power anything. There is a panel of indents where power mirrors, cruise control, and moonroof controls should have been. Yet this is an entire different generation of car. I don't think I see a single blank button in the V6. It has push to talk, sync, power everything, and more than my current car could have ever been loaded with. The idea of it being a base model screams "VALUE" like my compact does. But looking at the features, it's "Damn, I can actually accelerate, and roll down my passenger mirror without looking like an idiot."

dont be boring. live a little. it's just a car, it's not like you're marrying it. if you cant afford it, sell it, then get a boring econobox like a corolla or something. jeez it's not the end of the world if you figure out you bit off more than you can chew.
For some reason the scariest part of your statement was "Corolla".

Wrestling with this too. If there was 300hp option with leather and a torque curve that didn't fall off a cliff at 5k, I'd say buy that one.

Poor you.. though I wouldn't mind a Katzkin interior with blue trim to match the exterior colour. :p
