This is just something I have been wondering about. With the upcoming 10 speed automatic from Ford I would assume it ends up in the Mustang at some point. But in what way ?

I would assume by that time we might see a Bi-turbo V6 with a 10 speed automatic. I think it will not be available for the V8 because of weight and size.

This is just speculation of course but what do you guys think ? Personally I would love to see the V8 + 10 speed automatic combo in the near future.

Well know when something leaks, but I don't expect anyone will hear anything until the Mustang at least goes on sale in all the countries Ford plans on selling it in to avoid potential sales loss.

Ford has gotten pretty good at keeping secrets from the public, so chances are we won't hear anything until it's announced or accidentally leaked.

I don't see 10speed auto coming to Mustangs until next gen? We'll probably see them in Taurus/Fusion first

I wouldn't expect any engine changes this year. The Ecoboost with current trans is still new and they are still tweaking things as they go.

The patterns historically has been an engine/trans bump every 3-5 years.

Thing is, we've had the mt-82 since 2010 with the 2011s sporting it, so we're due for another tranny. I would love to see a dual clutch 8 speed.

True but I don't expect it this year. The only hints are Ford is still working on a higher than 6 speed tranny right now still and ordering starts in 30 days or so for the '16. The features are already likely set. since ordering starts very soon here. I doubt there are last minute big changes like tranny happening at this late a time.

The 10-speed is being developed for RWD applications. There's a 9-speed being developed for FWD :)

Depending on the transmission ratios, they'll adjust the rear end ratio to keep everything working well. The 10sp has a pretty good ratio spread, so it will be good for fuel econ.

I expect it will hit the Mustangs and F150s in for MY2017 alongside the raptor. If not they'll see it in 2018 after a year of beta testing in the raptor.

I really dont see a need for it in the Mustang though. It'll be too busy. On the trucks, hell yes. The ratio spread and quick shifting will be great for fuel econ and managing power between loaded/towing and empty.

Be careful what you wish for. we have a 9 speed auto in my wife's Jeep, and it seems to always be shifting, except when we are on the interstate, and even then it will drop a gear or two for small hills. Personally, with the engines we have a 6 speed is fine with me. But with the EPA mpg requirements as well as the CO2 laws, a 10 speed may well be the only transmission in order to meet those laws.

The Jeep also has the stop/start function at lights and stop signs, it is very irritating..but, we have the Trailhawk version and it can be disabled. You do have to disable it every time you start the car, which is a pain.

Remember the old ZR1 Corvettes? They would shift from 1st to 4th if you were gentle on the throttle, because you had plenty of torque. That was done for fuel economy.

What would be nice with then new 10 speed tranny is to have it "map" down to 5 or 6 speeds when in Sport mode. Yeah, fuel economy is better with more speeds (you can keep your engine in its most efficient RPM range easier) but having fewer speeds allows for less shifting and a little more performance.

All the C5s had that and people hated it and used a little bypass thing for it.

I think shifting through 10 speeds would be insanely annoying with the paddle shifter, I'd probably want it 10 speed automatic but in sport mode to change to 6 or 7

This will explain why that transmission is...[words].
http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/20...-transmission-puts-dog-clutches-on-the-leash/

Its not just the number of gears. It has 9 ratios and 4 are overdrives. With that, plus that dog clutch. Bleh.

The 10 speed Ford/GM, in contrast, is a much smoother design.

FYI, the 2011-2012 S197 Mustang GTs had the same feature (called "skip shift"). It was eliminated beginning with the 2013s.
