Ford previews 4-door Mustang hybrid sedan (Mach-4) to dealers

Bunch of backward looking whiners in here I swear. Mustang as a brand is more valuable to Ford and creates revenue streams (think Blue cruise subscriptions) and buyer conquests that allow the Mustang coupe to survive going forward, it’s that simple. The Mach E has been the #3 selling EV in the U.S. until just this year and hardly even did any true refreshing, just OTA software fixes/enhancements mostly.

The Mach 4 will ensure that sedan buyers have an option other than a POS Dodge Charger or the new Buick/Chevy/Cadillac LS6 powered competition.

I’ve come around to the idea of using Mustang as a brand. I still call the Mach E a fake Mustang (mostly because I’m just not a fan of EV’s), but it’s still pretty cool. I’d be interested in a 4 door V8 for sure. Maybe I could keep up with @HoldenSSVandGT350 and his Chevy SS

Lots of pearl clutching in here. A sport sedan with an option for a V8 and manual, and very likely to be AWD and possibly hybrid is somehow dragging the Mustang/Mach name through the mud? Seems like another good way to carry the legacy forward IMO. The 2 door fastback isn’t going anywhere either.

Falcon, Crown Vic, etc. do not have the same name appeal as Mustang. It’s a brand-centric world, like any smart business, Ford is trying to capitalize on it. Wouldn’t surprise me if the sedan outsells the fastback, just like the Mach E already does.

Mustang at its core is an evolution, originally developed to be something completely different from the cars of the 50’s. So, in actuality, the Mach 4 (and Mach E) is the very thing Mustang originally was. An alternative, an evolution.

What can I say? 4 door vehicles are garbage to me compared to 2 doors. Mustang originally was a cheap, fun car. It's definitely evolved since then.

Sales for 2026 so far of Mustang 32,000. Sales for the electric thing Ford also calls Mustang in 2026 so far were 13,495.

The Mach E sales are not even close to the ICE Mustang sales.

I disagree that Falcon doesn't have name appeal. I think Crown Vic has name appeal as well. The only reason not to like those names is because you didn't like the cars that used to be attached to them. That same evolution can happen to the Mustang name, where people associate it with a big, crappy family car that stodgy old fellers park in the fast lane rather than something sporty that young people want to buy and drive.

AWD and hybrid would be even worse than 4 doors. Lets turn Mustang into a bloated, $90,000 SUV.

Mach E is a sharp car, an electric car just isn’t my thing. Although I did have fun driving the GT trim a couple years ago.

Funny thing is, folks are acting like the fastback is going away. It isn’t, it will still be there for those that prefer the “traditional” Mustang. It’s just another option.

Prior 2 years, Mach E outsold its gas counterpart. Probably not a coincidence that sales dropped after the tax credit went away. If a 4 door car in general just isn’t your thing, that’s fine. The fastback isn’t going anywhere for those that have no interest in a sport sedan. Folks are acting like the fastback is disappearing, it’s not.

I wasn’t a fan of the Crown Vic back in the day (cop car and old folks car IMO) and I still don’t understand the appeal today. Maybe I’m the crazy one (quite possible actually).

I’d rather be debating a 4 door sport sedan Mustang than lamenting the Mustang being shelved altogether. Seems to me some folks here might prefer it be shelved than become its own brand with different variants for everyone. I’m not in that camp, I want it to live on as long as possible. The Mach E and upcoming sedan make it possible for our beloved fastbacks to live on.

Yes. The Mach 4 and whatever other Mustang variants Ford adds to the stable, haha, are going to end up subsidizing the Coupe as the 2 door sports coupe niche continues to shrink. This is good.

Ford: "nobody wants four-door saloons and compact hatchbacks anymore, so we'll discontinue the Mondeo, Fusion, Focus, Fiesta, and everything that isn't an SUV or a truck".
Also Ford: "we'll turn the Mustang into a four-door saloon, because that's what people want".

Well it seems Ford marketing has at least got the mustang communifty stirred up again. As an old guy and a mustang guy I have a couple of points to make.
First Ford needs a 4 door sedan that’s rear wheel drive with a V8 that will actually fit adults in the back seat (miss my town car).
Second marketing should have free reign to use any name in Ford’s history except “Mustang” God knows they have plenty, maybe they could conjure up a new name.
Third I would normally pass on whatever gas hybrid they intend to throw out there on this first model year production but, as I said before I’m at that age where I’m going to the dealer the morning the order banks open and I’ll have the supercharged coyote waiting to wedge into it before the ink is dry on the vehicle order.
Finally if they call it a Mustang I will rebadge it myself maybe it’s time for a Torino rebirth. LOL

Well, our Mach E has 83k miles in 5 yrs and it’s been pretty great if you ask me. Great range, good chassis balance and the stability control even allows some tail out fun with rear bias awd and big battery. Tons of legroom in back with 118” wheelbase too. But whatever. Also, the 1.8 30-50 and 2.5 50-70 times I’ve gotten on the Dragy sure are nice when the chump kid in the Coyote next to me tries to show off lol.

Once again Ford proves I am not their target customer anymore. The really need to clean the the top level management completely out.

The Mustang should be what a Mustang is: a 2 door coupe pony car. Not AWD, not a friggin SUV, not electric, and not 4 doors. If a 2 door coupe doesn't sell; kill it off then and stop but butchering it.

I'm a sucker for a manual sedan and have owned some classic ones over the years. Depending on pricing I'd be down for this.

I agree with what others have said about naming. I think falcon would be better.
