Why do you own a Mustang (or Mustangs)?

I grew up in a Ford house. My dad has always has had Fords. So in 88, was natural, bought my 1st Ford. It was an 88 GT. We still have it. Never looked back, have 9 more mustangs (and other Fords and other brands).

Toyota doesn't make Supras any more. (Don't get me started on that Austrian thing.)
A friend of mine had a Mk.III Supra Turbo, and we both liked it. He once loaned it to me for a week. It was 3500 lbs, and didn't quite feel like a sportscar, but it rode nice and had good tactile feedback, was really stable on curves, and - unlike anything I owned - the engine seemed at ease keeping up with traffic in a 70mph zone. Once I heard of a "grand tourer" I thought his Supra must have been made toward that concept. (Quite the difference from say, GM, using GT to mean "it has an optional engine and a stripe".)
I assumed the Mk.IV twin turbo was even better, but the prices got silly and the only Supras I could afford didn't run.

I'd been checking on Mustangs on and off since the '90s. (In 2006 I made a guy an offer on his 2003 Mach 1.)
After having 240SXs and an Evo, I wanted the next car to have highway gears and the torque to turn them.

(For a while there I was looking at classifieds for Firebirds and Trans Ams, but decided I would rather have a warranty than another project.)

I was eventually convinced the Mustang was the grand tourer I wanted. I rented one for a weekend trip with my girlfriend, and she said it was comfortable (very important, after the 240 with coilovers hit a bump that hurt her back ).
In early 2021 found this GT-PP1 car for sale, for about $5000 under MSRP, and decided it was time.
It wasn't the Mach 1 I really wanted, but it seems like 90% as good for 2/3 of the price.

bang for the buck. its always been bang or the buck. its harder to justify that these days.
for my car, the facelifted s550's have a very cool european kind of look imo with a really awesome retro inspired interior. its fast and handles pretty good.

even as i consider selling it every one of the 10K miles has been awesome. not a single mechanical hiccup. just a great experience. reliable, fast, beautiful, for way less than what it costs elsewhere.

So, I've been reading a lot of posts lately on here and the common theme in general is that Mustang owners really like their Mustangs. It got me to thinking, why did you folks buy a Mustang?

What was it about the car that made you buy it?

Is it just a car to you or are you passionate about it?

Do you have a short Mustang story that illustrates your love of the Mustang?

Would you buy another?

I will start; I like the design, especially the S550 and how it still resembles a Mustang (if that makes sense). I like the capabilities that come with these cars..... and the sound, whether it is the Voodoo or Coyote. Love them. Va-Room!

I am indeed passionate about Mustangs. It is part hobby, part therapy, part community engagement opportunity on 4 wheels.

Very short story; i had JUST bought my current Mach 1 HP and was cruising down the interstate about 2 hours from the dealership and on my way home. I was grinning ear to ear and oblivious to everything. I moved to the fast lane to pass a truck and pressed down on the gas pedal. Whoomp! Triple digits without breaking a sweat and I was in loooove. And the highway patrol officer who pulled up beside me was not..... We locked eyes, he grinned (I still had dealer plates on the car) and he held up his thumb and index finger about 1/2 inch apart as to indicate I was that close to getting a ticket. He moved on and I thought even state troopers love Mustangs!

I would buy another. In a heartbeat.

When I was 16 my buddy got a 93 GT. He let me drive it a few days at lunch and I was hooked for good.

I’ve loved cars since I was a kid, that’s always been the thing. My first performance car was a 2019 Fiesta ST, I bought myself new and taught myself manual on at 19. I had that for a few years and loved that car, I did a lot of mods on it as well with my buddy who owned a Subaru STI.

Well, sadly his STI got hydro locked, and so it was sold. He picked up a 2017 Mustang GT 6 speed in I believe late 2021. I drove that car once and it was game over. By 2023 I had sold the Fiesta ST and bought a new black 2023 300a GT 6 speed. That car got bought back by Ford because of an a pillar leak, and I then picked up a new carbonized gray 2023 301a GT 6 speed, which I absolutely adored. I had that until June 2025 which I then bought an Oxford white 2023 Mach 1 6 speed non-HP, I had that car for two months lol until I bought my Race Red 2022 Mach 1 6 speed HP.

Over that time of owning Mustangs, I’ve become enamored with the history of Ford, Shelby, you name it. I’m hooked, and will be for life. This Mach 1 will be in my stable for the long term. I don’t think I can trade it or sell it. In the future I’d love to add a 2019-2020 GT350 and 08-09 GT500.

Have owned one since I graduated high school. 1982 Mercury black cat edition Capri. Then '83 GT, '84 GT, '03 GT convertible, '03 Cobra Convertible (still have since new), '16 GT, '19 BULLITT (still have since new) yeah I got bit real hard vuy the Mustang Bug. There a HOOT!!!

There are Iconic cars in the world like in no particular order:

Mini Cooper, Porsche 911, Corvette, Wrangler, Beetle, ...

and the Mustang is just one of them. I turned my head towards mustangs once they followed Modern Retro styling with 197 as for me the Mustang is not just a horsepower and torque. It is the whole package where original styling references are present. You sit in this car but feel way more than just a car. You feel the whole history it builds and continues on.

I owned a mini cooper back in the day but do not even look at them now because of how bloated they became and how they lost all resemblance at what they should be.. S650 is less of my piece of bread as well because of a too modern styling. But s550 and s197 are my favorites.

P.S. Yes, and that picture in the previous post is a part of it . IIRC his girlfriend in the movie had a 911

Great story.

I wanted a convertible cruiser for my primary car and for road trips. I sought reliability, a decent level of performance (was initially after an Ecoboost), and great colors. I cross-shopped with C6 Corvette, 996 911, 987 Boxster, Camaro, and F-Type. Corvette, Boxster, and F-Type didn't have nearly enough storage for road trips (no surprise for 2-seaters), and the Camaro has, IMO, dangerous outward visibility and a shitty trunk situation. I chose the Mustang over the older 911 because of lower TCO and reliability.

The car has been great. In less than 2 years I've put on almost 5k miles in road trips, over 1/4 of the miles I've driven it. It's been up and down the East Coast, from Southern Florida to Maine, plus Tail of the Dragon. This thing just eats up miles, whether interstate or backroads. It's a true grand tourer- comfy, heavy, and fast as fuck.

Forgot to mention, this is my second Mustang convertible. First was a New Edge v6 where I learned to drive stick.

When the new Mustang came to Australia, it was love at first sight but to much money for me. I'm a crazy Christian crazy about God that is. I would pray for everyone and pray about everything. I felt led to go out at night driving around praying for the church and individuals. I would share what God was saying as led to. Then one day a mate from church took me to our local dealership next thing I know I'm going for a ride in one when we get back he said. What colour do you want.
I cried for a month. I got a lightning blue 2018 GT. There were 5 guys in business together raising money for ministry in the church and all came together feeling led by God to get me a car. They didn't know about my love of Mustangs. Some saw the car some the colour. So yeah my Mustang is a gift from God.

God knows when we are ready. I gave up my '09 when I got married. We needed a family car not able to pay for 2 cars. Years later I was blessed to pay cash for mine.

Two reasons for me.

First, about 13,000 miles of US road trips in Mustangs - just three trips from 2017-2019 so big miles every time! Went to fantastic places, including a drive from San Diego to Seattle and back, plus tons of National Parks. Had a Mustang (convertible) each time and enjoyed almost every mile apart from LA and driving into Seattle in pouring rain at rush hour on a dark Friday night...
I think the adventures helped me bond with the cars and this has transferred over to my Mach 1 even if that makes absolutely no sense!

Second, I got increasingly bored with the lack of engagement from a series of ever-more competent and complicated Porsches which culminated in the new 2014 911 Turbo Cab I bought myself for a big birthday (sorry @SheepDog!).

I wanted something more unique, more characterful, positive and with much better low-speed engagement.

The Mach 1 sharpened up the looks of the facelift front end so well in my opinion, and I thought it would be the last of the naturally aspirated, manual V8s so that was one of the easier car buying decisions I've made!

Obviously I was wrong as the S650 made it over here - happy they exist but prefer the S550 on almost all counts....

I made do with the orange accents on the FJG instead. I did see an orange mach 1 2021 with 513 miles on it just as I was buying mine but think that had ended up in another collection somewhere, unless you bought it? Ha ha
