How many of you guys have an ESS or any centrifugal supercharger in California or emissions state?

I have a paxton centri kit on my car, and get smogged every other year. I just swap parts around and retune it with the carb tune and it passes just fine. Usually I run bigger injectors and a f150 manifold or something, but paxton sells a carb compliant kit, its super easy to install and swap parts around

Id imagine uninstalling an ESS kit for smog time would be too intensive?anyone do this?

Honestly as long as the system was kept simple. LIke a low boost pump gas set up it wouldnt be too bad. Pull the blower, idlers, Fuel injectors, flash back to stock. The ESS is the easiest blower I have ever installed on a car. Probably a full day to remove then anther full day to go back.

I want to get an Ess but seems I might get a Paxton as it has a Carb sticker. They both seem to be the same thing.

no surprise…if I recall correctly, ESS used to just sell re-badged Paxton’s 😉

Sadly, CARB approved is the only way to go nowadays on the left coast…

…however, the number of approved kits is 20 times what there used to be. If I was still there, I would honestly plan my car around the kits that are available.

Gone are the days of…greasing the palm of the tech, running awd so you didn’t have to smog dyno, gutting cats with a chisel and a drill bit, swapping ECU with a stock one to pass, or even saving all your factory stuff to pass smog every other year.

….the struggle was real 😂

No, CARB is California only ( California Air Resources Board ).

Nevada does however have SB80 in effect (as of summer 2025) - which pushes it closer to a similarity of California's stricter emissions and anti-tampering regulations. Nevada also sends out DMV investigators to investigate parties suspected of modifying (or "tampering") with their vehicles. This also has been having an impact on shops in Nevada as well. A lot is going on here right now.
Lots of states have adopted “carb”
