So I bought the car in January, it was 25 degrees and I did not test the AC or buy a 3rd party warranty. So, a few weeks ago I turned on the AC and got hot air. Dropped the car off at dealer and they changed this charge pipe in the pic. Total bill was 800. Fair enough it’s a used car. So then a week later after a backroad fun drive, I hit the AC and got 20 seconds of cool air, then hot air. Back to dealer and they said the charge pipe cracked again, and replaced it at no charge to me. They also checked it for sources of vibration that could have made it crack.
So yesterday same thing, I did not use the AC having a fun drive but when it was over and I’m cruising along at 80 on the highway I hit the AC and got 5 minutes of cool air, then hot air. So I’m taking it back tomorrow to get fixed. I know compressors can go bad or the evaporator core can leak, but on the dye text it’s been this pipe cracking or something. Anyone else have this issue. Here’s the pipe they replaced.

Where did they say it is cracking did they show you in the one that failed? Is the rubber part of the line chafing on something in the engine bay or engine?

If it’s that pipe again, there has to be an issue with the way the Tech is manhandling or how it’s being installed. That line, if installed properly and if NOT shaking violently, if not rubbing against something, should not be cracking or breaking under normal use at all. If it’s actually failing due to a manufacturing defect, this is a first I’m hearing of it on this forum since 2015…

Usually the most common failure in the S550 A/C system is the EVAP core…. There’s a huge thread in here about that issue. Second to that is either the compressor clutch assembly OR the field coil, both in same location for failure.

Now another common problem is the HVAC blend door actuators are also a known issue in many modern Ford products. When these fail, usually one side of vents stop working, or both will stop, or lack of cooling or heat will occur if the doors are not working properly. There was this thread showing why the actuators fail and how to repair, if you’re a DIYer and IF that is an issue.

Thanks. You know they kept the car for 5 days and I let them drive it to see if some vibration or something chaffed. They did not tell me where on the pipe it failed, just that the dye tests showed it leaking. So I’m hoping it’s something else and not the same pipe failing again. Given that the day I picked it up, it worked and this last time I got 5 minutes of cool air, perhaps it’s something else now. They dye test will show if it’s a leak or not. If not then perhaps one of the items you listed. I’d rather not to try and fix it myself. I’ll let people know what they find

Two recent A/C threads involving GT350s.

Three areas of interest I have:

- Ford's component manufacturing Quality Control

- Proper diagnosis of the problem

- Correctly evacuating systems of debris and moisture before returning to service

A/C systems in-general are all the same, using similar components and principles. I've never deep-dived to see if this is a Ford, Mustang or GT350 issue.

The first time my AC failed that was the hose that they replaced. They showed me where it was cracked after they replaced it.

Yes. 4 times last summer. I'm on like 6 or 7 by now so many that I lost count by now.

I got to a point where I was thinking about replacing my motor mounts. Maybe it's a vibration thing? I don't know. Made in Mexico parts. It's annoying.

They checked the motor mounts and said they were fine.

Very interesting that such a part is failing multiple times. The first thing that stands out to me aside from the crack, is on either side of the crack it looks like the metal is marred by something either rubbing on it or tooling marks when installed (or removed)??

I don't know. So far the current hose is working.

Yes looks like it’s chafing a bit, metal on metal. Perhaps it’s a tight tolerance issue and it’s not supposed to touch anything. Seems like once it’s installed, the tech needs to make sure it’s not contacting the block or whatever it’s touching. But anyhow, Ford will pay again for the fix.

You guys aware there are aftermarket hose options out there? Earl's and probably a whole host of companies that make top end AN hoses and fittings can/do make AC lines. I'm very familiar with the system as I'm on my third compressor and I've had the whole system out. If I ever end up with a cracked line, a stock replacement is just not a consideration.

Well I don’t think the dealer will put in an aftermarket part. I’ve already paid for the fix so long as the new part falls they pay to fix it. But by now you think Ford would update this part. It seems to be a common failure, multiple times on people.
