If we pretend the Mustang is a 911? (Just humor me)

I traded my 2010 Porsche Carrera S for a 2018 Mustang GT. I have since traded the Mustang for a BMW Z4. Porsches can be a hassle to live with on a daily basis, depending on where you live. The things that make a 911 a pain in the ass are not an issue with the Mustang. As a weekend fun car, if you live where it never gets too cold and the roads are nice and smooth, the Porsche is great.

There is no comparison between a Porsche 911 and any Mustang. The Porsche is about precision, the Mustang is brute force. The Porsche is light and nimble, response is as fast as you can think it. The Mustang is a school bus, it's heavy and ponderous. You need to plan ahead. Engine performance is quite similar between the two, both relatively small displacement engines (relative to vehicle mass) that you need to wind the piss out of to get peak performance. That was my biggest complaint about both cars, but that's me. I like more bottom end power that comes on a lot easier.

I owned both the Porsche and Mustang for about 3 years. The Porsche left impressions ( both positive and negative) I'm not likely to forget. The Mustang was just another car, but it was easy to live with.
Interesting analysis, thanks for sharing. To me the GT350 is the pinnacle of Mustang achievement while still maintaining a raw/analog feel. The S650 platform has taken the Mustang to another level, but removed some of the raw feel for more comfort and refinement. Everyone has different tastes and desires for their driving experience and they can change and/or evolve over time.
I'm stuck in the analog world and don't want to upgrade to anything that feels like it's driving itself.
I'm sure the BMW is a blast, but an entirely different experience for sure.

The BMW Z4 is somewhere in between the Porsche and Mustang. It is as easy to live with on a daily basis as the Mustang, but weighs less and and handling response is quicker, but not Porsche quick or precise. Any car with a front mounted V8 or inline 6 has too much mass out front to match a Porsche, a Boxster takes handling to yet another level. The BMW has a much better power curve because the twin scroll turbo has no lag and produces torque right now.

My Mustang GT would run some of the back roads around here faster than my analog Porsche simply because it stayed in contact with the road surface and didn't rattle my eyeballs so much that I lost sight of the road.

If you ever decide to buy a Porsche 911, make it a 2018 991.2S or better. That eliminates the most expensive potential problems you could encounter.

Your assessment of the Z4 is spot on and fits nicely in that area. My first Mustang was a 2016 GT and in the words of Jay Leno, "it was ok, but very front engine heavy.. more of a muscle car than a sports car"
The GT350 seems to have reduced that effect considerably. The car shrinks around me and feels more nimble and responsive in the curves. The magna-ride dampers help tremendously as well.
If you ever get a chance to drive a 350 it would be worth the time.
I also hear you on the 911 models and where to start. The older models can really drain your pocketbook.

I have a 2022 and concur. The Z4 is incredible. I got one for the chick and convinced her to go for the M40i with the twin turbo V6. What the heck. The thing is extremely quick and handles very very well. Turns heads everywhere too. Doesn't feel to different than the old supercharged Cobra to be honest.

Nope. The B58 gets a single, twin scroll turbo, and is an inline 6 cylinder
yes aware it’s the same engine as the Supra which is cool. And also about the turbo. Been posting so much about fords need to twin turbo their v8s it just comes out. Slso the v is a habitual typo as well. Good catches though.

it’s rated near where the stock terminators were back in the day, but is faster. It’s a joy to drive and is a better car than the s650 GT overrall. They’re similar in how wuick they are, but the Z feels tighter and more confiden in the turns. I’m on mountain roads a lot and it’s a notable difference.

BMW is the king of sandbagging their numbers. I bet if you put that car on a dyno, it makes 380 at the wheels, or close to it.

True. The Terminators did that too. So does GM right now with the ZR1. Always great to buy something and it's actually BETTER than you thought.

BMW uses their own power rating system and published figures are conservative values for wheel horsepower and torque. The B58 engine used in the Z4 M40i would typically dyno around 399 - 405 whp by American standards. Mine dyno'ed 403, before mods... to get a baseline. A simple tune to raise boost 4.5lbs for 93 octane netted 47hp.

Anyway, the original question was about the Porsche 911. They are wonderful cars but you need to be willing to accept some very expensive potential risks... $30k - $60k. Or be ready to pay for a model or year that doesn't have these risks, which is over $100k.
