Woke up Thursday morning to a dense fog. Driving in to work, as the sun began to come up I saw what looked like a dribble of water on the passenger side of the windshield, so I flicked the wipers to clear it.

It didn't clear.

Looking at it again, I realized it was a crack. A perfect "T" shape, about 8 inches high, running off the bottom of the windshield, and about 6 inches wide. By the end of the day, it was nearly 24 inches wide.

Not surprisingly, no one has a windshield in stock. Not surprisingly, no aftermarket glass seems to be available yet. It's the OEM glass or nothing. More surprisingly, the OEM windshield has some sort of sound insulating layer in it that makes it pretty dear. $496 installed, to be precise. Next Friday.

I drove my first LX 5.0 140K miles on the original windshield. I kept wishing for a good rock hit, because the windshield was so sand-pitted it was a little translucent. But it never happened. This car barely made it to 6K miles.

I know it's not totaled like some of the cars on here, nor even backed into like S550Magnetic. But it still sucks.

Personally, and anyone else can agree or disagree, I think that Ford has been cheaping out on their glass for about the last 15 years or so. Just doesn't stand up to anything like it used to. Maybe that's why they need the sound insulating layer....

Either way, sucks that this happened to you.

Sucks man! But that's actually cheaper than I would have thought for an OEM piece. On a side note.... I was right near North Fork today! Hit powerhouse road to Auberry and into Prather for lunch! Fun Roads.....

Glass has gotten thinner to reduce weight. It's a precarious balance

Powerhouse Road is amazing. I occasionally drive both sides of it to get to Auberry. It will definitely keep you awake!

I think it needs to get a little thicker. This is my third break in a little over two years.

Yea, windshield replacement is way worth it to me. The price here sounds fantastic to me! Consider the H1 windshields are $1000...and there's two of em.

Sucks.

Do you know the cause?

I knew we took a hard hit from a rock in early December, but I never saw a star break. Obviously there was one, at least enough that this crack ran after the temperature cycled several times.

Last two windshields I replaced were on my 07 MKZ. They were about $240 each. I thought $500 was outrageous. But it's sure better than $1000!

I caught a pebble, on upper most right hand corner from viewpoint of standing in font of car. No cracks, to little tiny pits, about the size of a grain of sand. I got lucky I guess

Sure it was. $496 claim on a $500 deductible!
Sorry about your windshield; that really sucks. Often it is quite inexpensive to lower comprehensive coverage to have a $100 or $0 deductible. You can still have the $500 deductible for collision while doing so. I have $0 comprehensive deductibles, and the no-deductible coverage has come in handy numerous times. You can replace windshields when they get pitted for free! I have USAA insurance, not sure if the comprehensive-deductible-lowering change in cost is as minimal for other companies, but you might want to check.
