Possible impact of regulation roll backs?

I have a question, and thought this group might have informed opinions.


Trump has rolled back restrictions on emissions and fuel economy for cars. Is there a window for OEMs to build "dirty fast" versions for the US market?


In the 70s, introduction of emission controls and attempts at fuel economy really hurt performance cars. It seems we've engineered our way through all of that and more, but I was wondering whether there could be quick gains made in the next couple of years without the regs?

Are there things Ford could easily add/delete/change in our mustangs in a scenario like this?

I’m not getting excited until there is a court judgement ruling that shows the EPA was outside of their authority to implement that ruling in the first place. Once there is legal precedence, the next occupant of the White House can’t just flip the switch back on.

I had read OEMs are still going to roll out the Gen 5 truck emissions on the 2027 models so it’s business as usual unless they magically change their minds.

Probably because they’ve already spent a boatload in R&D costs. To backtrack would cost even more I’m sure.

Agreed on the legal precedent, once that’s determined you won’t (or shouldn’t anyway) have as much whipsawing on regulations from admin to admin.

Remember too, there has to be a market for the types of vehicles that would be a byproduct of less regulation. So, the legal piece is just that, just a piece. Whether we want to admit it or not, the enthusiast market has changed and will continue to change. That will determine what automakers do more than anything

Yep, just too much whipsawing from admin to admin on stuff like that. If the courts rule that it’s Congress that needs to determine that stuff and departments like the EPA are enforcement only, that will stabilize things from a policy perspective (or at least it should, who knows these days).

That 5,400lb M5 though. Woof, talk about a boat. I know it’s a hybrid now so there’s battery weight, but it’s 1,000lbs heavier than the last gen. That’s insane

Yeah, that thing is $130,000 turd. I would only by a low mileage F90 M5. (Especially the CS) I do like that a wagon is offered in the new one though.

My 2024 F150 with me in it weighs 5425 on the scales at SGMP, wow! And that thing runs 12.2's (has a whipple on it) for half the cost and I can carry my Ducati in the back!

Agree, but can you imagine the current batch of nimrods in Congress understanding anything about motor vehicle emissions and other aspects of cars and manufacturing? Congress almost has become as useless as tits on a bore hog!

It's all bullshit....and y'all are buying it. Do you know what really needs to be done? The Clean Air Act needs to be repealed by Congress in its entirety and a new common sense law re-written that is applicable to the USA in 2026...not the 70s. Otherwise, you will continue to have a litany of interpretations via court decisions stepping over each other, political/ideological administrations running the EPA stepping over each other with conflicting policies and rules due to the nuances and vagueness surrounding parts of the Clean Air Act. It just needs to be all put into the trash bin.

There is not going to be any real heyday from the actions happening.

The President can roll back this or that, or cancel this or that or sign into law/legislation this or that while he is the sitting Prez, BUT that doesn’t mean any incoming Administration after him can’t put the same things that were canceled, rolled back or signed off, back into play….

It’s just a game - who can do what power play, who greases who, and who benefits financially from the changes… whether it’s actual profits from sales, savings from a design/development/manufacturing aspect or stock market gains . . . In the end; it’s not about the people any more, it’s about the money.

Here’s what I see:
IF the changes popping up in the news do happen - not just talk - but actually happen via laws and legislation, there’s going to be a slew of lawsuits by all of those who were prosecuted for “tuning” and any emissions bypass devices - because now we’re saying “anything goes” and if there’s a rollback at the legal level that sets a real precedence - you betcha those jailed, fined, shut down and/or prosecuted are going to want THEIR rollbacks and be paid…. How many EPA related stories did we see in the news in the last 5 years where this or that performance shop or tuner was arrested/jailed/fined or in extreme cases shut down (loss of income)?

I mean what is in the news or seen on auto websites right now does not mean that everyone can just lob off their cats and run dirty - or “roll coal” like the Diesel truck guys do; emissions and catalytic converters are still a Federal mandate, even if your State does not partake in emissions inspections.

What we may see are more V8 varieties and higher HP output than ever before, because the so called “leash” will have been removed from the automotive industry and stupid mandates like a car having to get 50mpg from a combustion engine will go away.
