Hey all

So, the other day I took the car out for a spin and hit a bit of traffic. While idling, CHT got up to 229. Which is the highest I’ve seen. Fans never turned on

We’ll, when I got home I let the car cool down and when I checked the coolant level the next day, this is what I saw:

IMG_8209.jpeg

Granted the car is 9 years old now (2016 5.0 GT with only 19,000 miles. Garage kept summer car) so I guess it makes sense that the coolant would slightly decrease a bit

Anyway, went to the dealer to get a bottle of this pink coolant and they said that they no longer stock that and that they THINK this is the one that replaces it:

IMG_8217.jpeg

I’m like, ok… Are the two compatible? Like can I top off the already existing stuff with the new stuff? And without missing a beat, he’s like, I’m not sure honestly

So here I am, lol. Can I top of the original pink coolant with what’s in the bottle he brought out?

Or do they still make that pink coolant and he is just mistaken in saying that it’s no longer produced.

Thanks in advance for the help

If you only drive during the summer, why not just top it off with distilled water? I wouldn't mix two color coolants, the chemical composition may be different. If you are concerned about the mix ratio being off, just do a coolant flush and replace with the new Ford yellow.

Yes, you can use it.

Backward Compatibility/Use of Motorcraft® Yellow Antifreeze/Coolant with/in

place of Motorcraft® Orange Antifreeze/Coolant and Motorcraft® Specialty

Green Engine Coolant with Bittering Agent

Ford Engineering has approved the use of yellow-colored Motorcraft® Yellow

Antifreeze/Coolant
(Ford specifications WSS-M97B57-A1 and WSS-M97B57-A2) to service all

Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury vehicles factory-filled with the following antifreeze/coolants:

• Orange-colored Motorcraft® Orange Antifreeze/Coolant (Ford specifications WSS-

M97B44-D and WSS-M97B44-D2)

• Dark green-colored Motorcraft® Specialty Green Engine Coolant with Bittering Agent

(Ford specification WSS-M97B55-A)

Topping off, Draining and Refilling:

Motorcraft® Yellow Antifreeze/Coolant can be used to top-off or entirely replace (drain and

refill) antifreeze/coolant in vehicles factory-filled with Motorcraft® Orange

Antifreeze/Coolant
and Motorcraft® Specialty Green Engine Coolant.

Flushing:

• Flushing the cooling system is not required prior to entirely replacing (draining and

refilling) Motorcraft® Orange Antifreeze/Coolant or Motorcraft® Specialty Green Engine

Coolant with Bittering Agent
with Motorcraft® Yellow Antifreeze/Coolant if the cooling

system is not contaminated.

Normal Scheduled Maintenance:

• Follow the factory-fill antifreeze/coolant change-out intervals in the Scheduled

Maintenance section of the vehicle’s Owner’s Manual.

o Example: A 2019 Ford Escape factory-filled with Motorcraft® Orange

Antifreeze/Coolant
that is topped-off/replaced with Motorcraft® Yellow

Antifreeze/Coolant
must adhere to the antifreeze/coolant change-out intervals in the

2019 Ford Escape Owner’s Manual’s Scheduled Maintenance section - “initial

replacement at six years or 100,000 mi (160,000 km), then every three years or

50,000 mi (80,000 km)”.

You can mix the yellow just fine, but you want to dilute it with 50% water before you add it. They sell prediluted but its slightly more expensive.

Ideally with the age of the car id just dump out the orange and refill with yellow. You wont get all of it out, but most of the coolant will be fresh.

Topping off with water for the little bit he's low is not normally a bad thought.
But he's well past the time frame for a fluid exchange.
You're also correct about being careful of mixing coolant colors/chemistries. But, in this case it is perfectly acceptable. The new ford yellow is specifically backwards compatible with their orange coolant.

And... these are the facts that the dealership employee should have known, or at the very least, should have been able to look up and share with a customer. This is why I think dealerships suck.

In all fairness, this type of customer NON-service is rampant across a lot of industries these days. Gone are the days when you can go somewhere and find an "expert."

I used to sell small engine parts, and I promise I knew most things inside and out. When I didn't, I looked it up or found a coworker who knew. Wouldn't have felt right stating I didn't know something that I should or could have, and letting a customer walk out not knowing if what I sold them was correct.

Hmmm… Good point. This is a valid consideration. Thanks for the tip

This is another good point. Even though the mileage is very low, the overall age is not. Thank you

Your coolant level looks normal to me. You might have a different problem.
Oh? It’s a good inch and a half below the “minimum” mark. I always heard that if it’s not filled to capacity air pockets can be introduced into the system

What else do you think it could be? Just a bad thermostat?

I'd be more inclined to think that the fans not turning on was the issue. On stock programming they should at least be on low speed by 220CHT. At idle and slow speed or with A/C on there should definitely be fan.
