does anyone know how to disassemble the outer cv joint? The inner one is cake. Im rem treating all the cv guts and reassem with good ultra high melting point grease as im killing them after 2 races. Am I missing a clip or not banging it hard enough? I can't get it apart. Thanks!

Usually the outers are not the problem. The inner cv's are the weak link. I use crytox grease. It's expensive as hell but it is hands down the best for the job.

My post i did a while back pertained to the rebuild of the inner, not outer CV.

Here’s Tom’s excellent write up for CV Joint rebuild:
https://www.mustang6g.com/forums/th...shaft-rebuild-for-serious-track-users.191680/

This may be the rebuild kit for the outer; it’s best to use your VIN on the Ford parts sites to get exact parts need:
https://www.oemfordpartsdirect.com/oem-parts/ford-boot-kit-fr3z3a331d?c=Zz1zdXNwZW5zaW9uJnM9ZHJpdmUtYXhsZXMmbD01Jm49QXNzZW1ibGllcyBQYWdlJmE9Zm9yZCZvPW11c3RhbmcmeT0yMDIwJnQ9Z3QmZT01LTBsLXY4LWdhcw==

Some of the guys over on TMO have found using a revised boot kit is better than the Ford replacements:

There’s a lot of YT vids available for how to replace outer CV boots on many CV axles.

replacing the boots are easy and not what im looking to do (well I will have to do that when I reassemble the axles). didn't know if there was a secret for disassembled the outer joint. Guess its juts bang away until the clip lets go.

I am using the rear outer CV joint on the front of my AWD conversion and thus I had to take them apart. I tried everything and could NOT get the shaft out. I even had the special tool designed for this purpose. I eventually just cut the shaft off close enough to the joint to be able to rotate the joint enough to get the balls out.

I still could not get the little stub of a shaft out even with a press and resorted to machining the end off to expose the retaining clip. At this point it was obvious that the joints are NOT meant to be serviceable. The groove in the inner race for the retaining clip has a sharp edge and there is not way it is going to come apart. Once I had mine apart I added a large chamfer to the groove to allow for future disassembly

Not what you wanted to hear, but that is my experience.

No it is exactly what I wanted to hear - a definitive answer. I thought this may be the case after beating on one for a bit, using the special tool, etc. Mineral spirits followed by flushing with brake cleaner til it comes out clear. Then let dry for a couple hours, pack with my special grease, and re assemble. Thanks for the info!

What did you use? Redline or crytox?
neither actually. I use tungsten disulfide grease. only been able to find it in one place (happens to be an hour from me) in Chattanooga tn. I run this in the miata hubs we make (I have a cnc machine shop) and in the rem'd miata axles on my other race car. similar properties to the krytox. I haven't melted that stuff ever and don't think I ever will. I used everything on the miata hubs and would liquify it all (including the redline). axles are a little easier on the grease than the timken style bearing hubs I make but Its so goon on the hubs its going in the axles when they get back from rem treatment.
