D, this is exactly why I have trouble looking at OG products, let alone consider buying them, knowing there is a huge markup. I'm sure the "OG spec" product refinements are better, but my casual use cannot justify the huge premiums.

Case in point, my foam cannon:

Capture.JPG

One of these cost me $99 from Griots themselves, with free delivery to my mate's address in Dallas. It's exactly the same product, so I'm not sure where the 57% premium is.

All this reminds me of my father hating our family doctor back when I was a child. This doctor had his Lamborghini parked at the rear of the practise. All the other doctors just had regular shit heaps, but most likely had expensive toy cars at home but out of sight of their paying customers. It was this obnoxious display of wealth that obviously irritated him, although jealousy might have been a factor as well. :giggle:

The OG videos are a double-edged sword.
On one hand they can showcase and/or demonstrate a product, but on the other hand, it shows how this guy is rolling in money. The fit out of his garage, the toys and the cars.
One must then think if the products are over-priced to begin with.

I think "Mike", the guy often shooting for him, is a full-timer, and there is minimal editing involved in their content anyway. It's relatively cheap to produce vs exposure gained.

My two cents, which rounds down to you-know what!
Exactly. I can't watch his videos anyway. His voice is like nails on a chalk board to me. I have been known to shop on his website a few times, but I always, ALWAYS go somewhere else to actually find it cheaper and buy :) ... I like to buy from the direct website when I can (ie Armour Detail Supply, Koch Chemie, Gyeon USA, etc.) and avoid the middle man as much as possible...

The price of that foam cannon would have been in AUD, convert that to USD and you are back to $99.00 USD. A large percentage of his products are set at a specific manufacturer dictated price point, for example, Swisstrax, Rag Company, Rupes, Koch Chemie, Flex ect.

Most people in the USA don't like buying from OG because they charge for shipping, which is in contrast to larger companies that offer free shipping over a certain threshold. So, take that out of the equation and the price is there or thereabout compared to competitors.

I fully understand why people don't like him, and by association, the company itself. He has offended me numerous times with inappropriate judgements, when in fact, he should be looking at himself before making pot shots about how others choose to live. Is that not why/how OG began. I guess when you put yourself up for the world to see via social media, you will naturally expose yourself to criticism and jealously, and then respond to that in an arrogant way. But................................

He came from nothing, worked hard and created a successful business. He doesn't drink, smoke or go on expensive overseas holidays...................from what I have seen and heard from his own words. What I'm trying to say is, we all have that thing (or things) we spend money on in the name of a hobby or interest, or to simply make us happy. For MM, that is expensive cars, a nice garage and fancy tools.

I love watching his content from a dreaming point of view, if I had his money, I would be doing the exact same thing with my garage, how it would be fitted out and what fills it. I also appreciate some of his business approaches, as in value what you have to offer your customers and don't discount your way to the bottom.

Umm, cough, cough... you're right, currency selector was set to AUD$.
I take that bit back, with a large slice of humble pie. 🤐

Trust me, I've fallen for that too. Not OG, but I've also been stung import duty on a seemingly affordable purchase that ended up ruining my day.........................I call it a "learning experience".

For reference, I only buy stuff from OG that I can't get elsewhere, the brush and scents in this case, and not shown, a 3/8 Mosmatic female thread quick disconnect that is specific to his store.

Yeah I have a chuckle when people call them “Overpriced Garage”. It shows their ignorance in what is actually going on.

Case in point, Cox hose reels. I’ve seen many people complaining they can get them cheaper from other places. But what are they actually getting? The standard Cox hose reel has a brass swivel fitting. The OG spec version is stainless steel. This is nearly a $100 USD part added to their version of the same reel. Remove that cost and SUPRISE….its the same price as everywhere else.

OG has value to those who don’t want to spend the time or money buying substandard or “just ok” equipment and supplies. Matt has taken a ton of time, effort, and money to research and document what does and doesn’t work in specific applications. As he will tell you, he’s a curator. That’s never a cheap or easy process in any field. He’s knows his audience and he doesn’t stray from his goal.

Imagine if more people had his drive and passion…maybe they too could have a Porsche GT3 RS in a pristine garage instead of complaining over a few dollars 🤣🤣🤣

I just run into a red solo cup 😁 and have a ppm meter.
1ppm!

I have the same gadget WD but ONE?! You are one lucky sumbitch WD. Super clean water is SO much better for yuman beans and, plumbing. Color me envious²!

..and there is minimal editing involved in their content anyway. It's relatively cheap to produce vs exposure gained.
I was also going to mention this, Adam. I have watched my share of OG vids and have only detected maybe a half dozen times when I noticed an edit. It's pretty much "start recording," "stop recording," and upload to YT.

I'm sure the folks responsible for the OG channel are happy that few edits are required because those clips typically run 30-90 minutes. They only shoot in HD (not 4k,) but even so, the file sizes are insane, i.e., a 90-minute clip would render to approximately 100+ GIGAbytes!

So, even with a rock solid gigabit Web connection, it takes someone at OG a couple HOURS to upload one of their typical vids.

He has offended me numerous times with inappropriate judgements
That got my attention D, might you be willing to elaborate?

Yes, I was super impressed that my new filter setup pulled it down to below 5 PPM at full flow. I even pulled the nozzle and ran it full bore (about 2.5PPM) and it still stayed below 5 PPM whereas its over 100 unfiltered. Now, just a waiting game to see how long the resin lasts. This new setup doesn't have clear tanks and color changing resin. I will just monitor once in a while with my handy dandy meter :) With my fairly low TDS, I hope it lasts a while...

I am sure it will, Alex with those low numbers. But I got a grin out of your photo because the valves on top are the exact same valves used on most residential water softeners. <grin> Both my softener tank and the carbon tank have the exact same head unit and valves. Mine have been in for going on twenty years and I have had zero issues although I almost never need to use them as the controllers do that for me.

I'll go out on a limb here and estimate that you will get at least a year and maybe even two years out of that resin. That said, I don't trust the meter on my DIC-20 as I think it's biased toward CR Spotless not to mention it's pretty meager but as long as it's at zero, I keep using it. Once it starts up though, I replace the resin.

Yeah the resin is almost as much as the whole unit but I can get a bigger container cheaper and it will recharge it twice. I will keep it in the house in my supply room out of heat and cold. Of course it all comes inside once the lows get to freezing anyway. My poor third bedroom looks like a war zone in the winter time 😳.

You can get mixed bed resin from non-detailing sites and save a few bucks. I bought a pound of mixed bed to refill my DIW-20 and got rid of the cartridges using the RVMods down tubes. I only used half of it and sealed the other half in an airtight dogfood canister.

Just things he makes judgement on that without comprehending the full story. You know how it is, when someone you respect or idolize says something that is like a punch to the gut. I also don't care for his "get a better job" solution to being a more successful person, I find that quite disrespectful. Not everyone has that insane drive to earn a billion dollars. I won't elaborate beyond that.

The bolded part above is where a lot of people get stuck. I do realise that not everyone can afford to buy a Kranzle or a Porche, but dismissing them as overhyped and/or overpriced is ignorant and pure jealousy at work.

What's even more perplexing for me is those who go and join the OG Facebook group, then spend 99% of "contributions" to the group making pot shots at either OG or those who understand the best-of-the-best mentality. The remaining 1% of their "contributions" are asking completely stupid questions that are plainly obvious, are on the OG website or showcased on the YouTube channel. Yes, I understand the saying "there's no such thing as a stupid question", but trust me, when you have everything in front of you in obvious kind of way, then still ask the question, well it IS a stupid question and pure laziness by the asker.

In all cases, these people are the ones buying "just ok" or "good value for the money" products, then attack all who dare to want something better, but then also complain when those products fail or don't deliver the desired results. You get what you pay for.

I say all that as someone who is definitely NOT rich, and likely never will be. But I do value nice things. Why? Because in most cases where I have not spent the extra money, I've been left disappointed, and then end up going and buying the better item down the track anyway. Buy once, cry once. Buy cheap, by twice. My next post will show that in action................................

Ah yes, I recognize that fitting.
When I did my wall-mount pressure washer last year, I made a number of selections with regard to fittings, hoses, reels, machine..............right down to the mounting hardware finishes. However, the only thing I didn't really get to choose was the 3/8 quick disconnect fitting on the end of the hose. In that regard, I had to settle for the standard issue Chinese-made stainless steel MTM fitting that was part of the package.

MTM STAINLESS STEEL QC SOCKET 3/8FPT (detailingshed.com.au)

Now, that fitting served its purpose, but felt somewhat lacking in finish quality, especially compared to the Mosmatic quick connect on my gun. When you consider this fitting is a $10.60 USD part, that kinda makes sense.

Shortly after my install, MTM released their new Prima line of USA made fittings. These looked much nicer, almost like the 1/4 Mosmatic used on the OG-spec gun. Now we are talking about a $19.99 USD part.

IMG-9469.webp

IMG-9478.webp

While I liked how it looked and felt, the lack of knurling made it difficult to use when wet. I also found the Prima fitting did not function very well with the more precise Mosmatic plug fitting used on the inlet of the Mosmatic gun, it really needed to be forced closed, which is not how these fittings should be work.

So, I now arrive at the Swiss made T304 stainless steel Mosmatic 3/8 quick connect fitting. Now we are talking about a $59.85 USD part.

Mosmatic T304 Stainless 3/8" Female QD Coupler | Obsessed Garage

IMG-0886.jpg

Below - Chinese made MTM on the left, USA made MTM Prima in the middle, Swiss made Mosmatic on the right.

IMG-0892.jpg

I was skeptical if I would feel the difference between the $60 fitting compared to the $10 and $20 alternatives, but I get it now. The downward movement of the Mosmatic is noticeably crisper and smoother. And mated to the Mosmatic inlet plug, its just a more precise feeling item.

So why didn't I get this fitting from the beginning? Because that particular Mosmatic fitting is specific to and only sold by Obsessed Garage. None of the local companies are able to have access to this part. So, my choice was limited to the Chinese-made MTM, then the USA-made MTM Prima. If the Prima had worked with the Mosmatic inlet fitting, I would have stopped there. So, three fittings later, I'm finally content.

The above is where the OG concept comes into the equation, as in not settling for "that'll do" mentality. The question would then be "why spend so much time, money and effort on a simple pressure washer fitting?". Because this is my hobby, what makes my world turn. I use my pressure washer a lot, and its something I enjoy using. It's therefore only natural for me to chase such perfection. Everyone has that hobby or interest in which they devote such obsession into. For me, that just happens to be cars and detailing.

I don't think resin will degrade with temperature Alex but humidity definitely would duit so be sure your stock is in an airtight container as Brian suggested.

My poor third bedroom looks like a war zone in the winter time
OMG I laughed and laughed reading that Alex as we have one of those bedrooms as well.

And if you haven't seen George Carlin's routine on "stuff," it's well worth a looksee. I didn't always agree with his politics but that sumbitch was IMHO, one of the funniest comedians of all time.

I bought a pound of mixed bed to refill my DIW-20 and got rid of the cartridges using the RVMods down tubes.
You know, I wondered about that possibility when I got the DIC-20, Brian and I'm glad it was an easy mod.

But in my case, shortly thereafter it was time to replace the resin in my house softener so I picked up a bag of mixed. Got a buddy to stop by and give me a hand with the carbon and resin refills and then the shit hit the fan.

We managed to spill maybe a small handful of resin beads while pouring into the tank and it was now on the garage floor. I'm thinkin' NBD, I'll just vacuum it up.

Well let me tell ya, walking on concrete covered with resin beads that you can hardly even SEE, is the perfect solution if you want to slip and wind up slamming your head into the concrete! <laughing>..and it was funny..for a little while anyway but it took us a long time to sweep most of the up and the damn south Texas wind didn't help!

We were very careful during the pour and I had the requisite big "tank funnel" too but we still wound up with a couple hundred of those damn beads on the floor. The ShopVac got most of them but I still felt beads under my bare feet and shoes for weeks afterward.

I will obviously be more careful next time on the tank refill BUT I will gladly pay for DIC-20 carts as I have zero interest in dealing with those F'ing beads ever again. <smile>

Just things he makes judgement on that without comprehending the full story.
Copy all, D and I do know what you're talking about as I felt the same way for a long time. It was only after I realized that he does go the extra mile (and then some,) to find the best "whatevers" for a given task.

Sure it's over the top much of the time but as you stated so well, when a tool is essential in your work or hobby life, you want it to not only function as advertised every time but, you also want it to be the best tool for the job. I get it to the max my friend and we are clearly reading from the same sheet of music.

Unfortunately, Matt has a somewhat arrogant persona and that may be partially due to his relentless searches for the absolute best products or techniques. When you've tried all the options for something and only one of them meets your requirements, you tend to take on that same sort of attitude, i.e., "been there, done that" kinda thing.

That doesn't mean I always enjoy his vids, I definitely do not, but it does mean that I trust his opinions on products/techniques that I use as well or, hope to use. His diligent testing and research are the main reason I watch the channel because avoiding all that work saves me from the "testing pain" and once again, brings the old addage to mind as you said..

"But cheap, buy twice."

I have done (and most of you probably have as well,) my share of buying cheap and in nearly every case, it bit me in the ass. So, after requiring a good hit on the head with a sledgehammer a few dozen times, I no longer look for "the best deal," I look for "the best choice."

Because in most cases where I have not spent the extra money, I've been left disappointed, and then end up going and buying the better item down the track anyway.
My point exactly, D. Never again I tell myself or at least, not too many more times. <grin>

I'm not so much worried about the resin but the leftover water in the tank. Pressure washer too. I treat the pump with pump saver but still don't want to run the risk of anything freezing. I have a couple of large Rubbermaid totes I put my filter, PW, and all my ik sprayer chemical bottles in and tote them in the house. I got shit sitting everywhere lol. Luckily I kinda pile it all in a corner I don't use so I can at least get in the door. I have my desk, printer and stuff on the other wall I have to get to 😳😳.
