My fuel gauge showed I had an eighth (maybe 1/16th) of fuel left in the tank. The low fuel indicator had not come on, and I still had "50 miles to E" per the info display.

Being old school wanting to keep my fuel pump in fuel and not bone dry, I filled up. Imagine my surprise when it took 15.5 gallons! According to to the manual, that's the size of my fuel tank. I've always thought that when the needle is on "E" I still had a few miles left to find a gas station. Is that not the case with this Mustang?

This fill-up was the second tank. The first was from the dealer. Is my fuel gauge and MTE estimate that off? Shouldn't the "Low Fuel" indicator come on at 1/8th of a tank?

That's pretty odd considering that usually when I go to fill up at around 50 miles to E, the car only takes about 13 or so gallons of fuel.

My low fuel indicator came on with 15 miles DTE. I don't remember how much gas it took, but I was rather shocked. I figured it would come on at the 50 mile mark.

My low fuel light comes on at 1/8th tank. DTE when this occurs varies based on current MPG. This is different from the warning on my S197, which always came on at 50 miles DTE.

In my GT on a recent long trip I ran it down to 30 miles range. On the fill-up it took about 14 gallons. That seemed to me like a good reserve, as I was averaging about 23.5 mpg at the time.

Um... I always keep the fuel mileage / miles to E / trip time / trip mileage screen up on the center screen thing, because none of the other options seem worthwhile. And I never let it go below a half a tank.

So, you fill up every 150mi or so. Isn't that like 2-3 times a week for you?

My fuel light was on last time I filled up, and I took 14.5gal, I don't recall what DTE was at the time. It was less than 20, so there's not much reserve.

Someone should test this to see how far it will go after it hits 0. Just make sure to bring along a gas can.

Why half a tank? Seems very excessive unless you like driving around with extra weight all the time.

Because I never want to be caught in a situation where I need fuel and don't have it.

Same reason I carry around an air compressor and a floor-jack and a set of road flares and triangle reflectors and an 18 inch socket wrench and tow straps and and a trench shovel and jumper cables in my trunk all the time. I don't trust the flimsy jack and wrench that come with the spare tire. You hope that you'll never have to use it, but it's nice to know it's there.

And I'm also gunshy from having to sit in line for seven hours to get gas after Hurricane Sandy and want to always make sure I'm ok if there's a long term power outage or something like that and gas pumps are unavailable.

Yeah, I fill up every 150 miles or so, give or take. That's normally about once a week. I average 10,000 miles a year, but a lot of that comes from long road trips where I might be driving 1,200 miles a day (drive back and forth to Miami at least once a year, usually).

Once a week isn't bad, I thought you had a longer commute. I have a 60mi round trip, but stations are readily available, so I don't have to plan too far ahead to ensure I keep hydrated. Although I rarely push it to the limit.

The memory of getting in line at 1:00 a.m. to get to the gas pump at 8:00 a.m. for gas after Hurricane Sandy has made me want to always be sure I've got enough gas... just in case.
