3mins read GT500 REVIEW
I've posted it on trackmustangosonline FB page but I've been asked to share it here too🙂

So I've now tested 3 times the Gt500 on track.
I've waited a little to review and share my thoughts on the car.

As you know my race car is a 10speed GT 2018.

So most of the comparison today will be with another Mustang.
Gt500 is stock. I run supercar3 305 tires (250$ each)

The Gt500 is that car that with a (very?) good dose of adjustments (aka mods) will be a phenomenal tracktoy.
I won't comment on record laptimes cause there are other drivers tracking the car more and faster than i do.

What i will comment is about "how ready the GT500base is for track duty and how i compare with my racecar.

IMPRESSIONS and FACTS : the gt500 base is not ready for track usage (good talk lol )
Let me explain what i mean. The car is 4100lbs heavy. With me 4300lbs.
The dyno says this car is 670whp .

GOOD THINGS.
THE ENGINE IS SUPERB.
Your dont have the "kick "of the torque u have in the ZL1 but a progressive endless push till 7500rpm
The DCT. This is the golden piece. The shifting (paddles) are fast. Precise. Great feedback. The downshifting is phenomenal.
If my racecar had it...

BRAKES are precise. Strong. To stop 4500lbs ain't easy.

Temperatures are all very well under control

CONS. I say again what i said before. The car is waaay too soft. And.. i like soft cars.
The front suspensions are not enough to substain the enormous front weight.
Consequence: the rear becomes super loose in braking zone.
This makes almost impossible to do a proper trail braking without loosing the rear.
This is one of the biggest difference with my racecar.
And YOU CANNOT DRIVE THIS CAR AS A RACECAR.

The rear is not planted and in bumpy tracks is hard to put down power without having the TC kickin in sometime vanishing the advantage of 200extra whp (vs my GT)

The car is ..tall. Sometime see outside is challenge with the big hood.

What would I do if I decide to make it more race oriented

Low.budget.
AJ Hartman stiffer spring kit. I will try 400lbs front springs (if not more?) Stiffen sway bar front.

Reduce weight. The car can shave easily 150lbs. (Steve Luca knows more about single weights)
But no passenger seat rear seat delete and a battery can dothat.
On this note... Brakes. They are good. But hella big.
There is so much to gain in case of 350R swapping. (or AP RACING) with lighter calipers, rotors, and as consequence smaller and lighter wheels.

If not swapping brakes this is a 2000$ upgrade. To have a very good car.

The next step
Coilovers. The car will be optimal with a set of good coilovers. (Fortune coilovers Just kidding Terry Fair 😆)
My choice would be Cortex
Aero. This car would benefit. A lot.
A FULCRUM 14 in the rear is what i would do. And something like my high DF splitter in the front.
With a BRAKES KIT SWAP you can save another 150lbs in unsprung weight.
After these. Sky.is the limit.

some laptimes.
1.36 at laguna seca on supercar3. (racecar is 32. laguna loves power)
1:50 sonoma with ps4 (hella skatchy with the 500 spinning wheels in straight line in 3rd gear!). Racecar is 1.40

2.01 thill CYCLONE (1.58 ish on bypass) .racecar is 1.51 bypass

Last thought..
IF ONLY THE DARK HORSE HAD THE DCT.......

Have a nice day
Alessandro

Nice write up. Where are you getting your SC3 at for that price?

Very few believe me when I tell them about this looseness on entry. My GT350 was much better in this regard. I think the new front knuckle geometry, and abs tuning has a lot to do with this. I also suspect the cftp wing cars use the aero to help tame this.

I have done stiffer springs and bars (now steeda), dsc sport controller - this helped the corner entry also. That alone has made a big difference. This car can be very fast while still streetable.

I like to disassemble things.
OP, were you tracking the car with the factory OEM alignment/camber settings?

I tracked my procharged 350 for 1 year+ maybe 15 track days....and was thinking of tracking my gt500 now.......my experience is yes you need to lower center of gravity.....so I installed steeda dualrate springs.....but these cars need fat rears to handle power......I used 305/19 fronts and 325/19 rears supercar3 tires and all was perfect never loosing the rears..........problem is they only make 305/20 rears on the gt500 rears.......I hated the cup2's they got greasy after 2 laps...........maybe swap the wheels to 19 inch? the supercar3Rs were the best but only lasted 3 track days vs 8 with supercar3 ....but not a big grip difference

3R are the fastest street tire. In a 2min lap is almost 2 sec faster than supercar3.

Unfortunately 19 wont fit the gt500 brakes.
And i agree cup2 are worthless. Expensive and same pace of supercar3.
The steeda springs are not great especially for the track usage.
AJ HARTMAN just lunched a new adapter that allows u to insert a 2.5" spring in the front and rear ..increase to infinite the spring rate options.
Im tempted. Although gt500.is not my race car (and is my wife daily) so I'm still on the fences

my opinion is that lowering springs (need balance with street comfort and track) and a 325 rear tire setup should fix all issues.....worked perfect on track and I kept up with gt3's and 911 turbos......with the 630whp gt350 (plus its manual)

Nankang CRS 200TW is available in 305 and 325 20". Faster than cup2, and cheaper. Phils tire service has them in the newer, faster 2023 compound. G2 performance has them in 2022 compound, which was still good and fast.

I have been running them since last summer.

I tried them on my racecar. They are good for sure. Little too sensitive to tire pressure. But I've heard the gen2 CRS (new compound) is even better.
However i wasnt ready to spend almost 2grand for tires lol. So i got these supercar3 for 1000$
If i ever get more serious on tracking the car I'll definitely go that direction. Or 3R.
