Was the S550 ECU originally locked?

I know the S650 ECU will be locked for all but a few large after-market companies. However, when the S550 first came out, did it also have a locked ECU which was later unlocked by tuners? Thanks

and good luck to S650 owners - not only a locked PCM, but have fun trying to upgrade to a different stereo system within that integrated slapped on a dashboard "playpad" monstrosity... Plus, it's been stated that if owners try to change or manipulate the As Built using tools like Forscan, it can result in locking down other modules....

Plus, it's been stated that if owners try to change or manipulate the As Built using tools like Forscan, it can result in locking down other modules....
Which basically means no aftermarket bolt-ons, no cams, no turbo's no non-ford approved FI, no gear swaps, hell, even tire height changes may be a hard no. So in reality, the overpriced 500hp DH is still slower than every 15-20 s550 out there. If you catch my meaning.

The 11+ dodge was locked.
then they tried again in 2013
Then in 2015 they did it good, but EVERYONE still tunes their 15+ dodges.
The C8 was untuneable. It’s being tuned.
the L5P duramax was locked for years. Now being tuned in owners driveways.
21+ F150 was locked down for a while. Now being tuned.

Never say never 😉

Technically everything that’s not aftermarket is locked. Unless of course, you buy the key.

Yeah, my initial response to this was going to be that every thing had to be unlocked at some point, but that's not obvious to most.

I don't know who's selling keys, but fortunately seed/key hasn't been the biggest hurdle these days ;)

I might be using the wrong terminology (a coding guy was trying to explain it to a gearhead) but, for instance, Roush pays ford for access and most likely more. Livernois may, I’m not sure though. Not many do.

Yes indeed, some outfits like that are being handed the keys in more ways than one.
At my day job, it’s a regular RE task but fortunately s/k doesn’t change that often and when it does it’s usually not tough to figure out.
GM currently authenticates the seed then delivers the key through their server…at $40 a pop no less.

Well when I say 'unlocked' 15-17 use a skeleton key like yer parents used for that 'liquor cabinet', 18+ use a master padlock to keep yer hoe safe in the shed, 21+ uses safe lock that contains yer Netflix password & copies grannies gone wild, s650 uses whatever the hell they use to start a nuclear sub from everything I've read haha.

All this has been said before time and time again. It is always locked until somebody figures out how to get in. It's not like automotive applications get designed in a vacuum or something, they are just standard, firmware driven devices like everything else and they are designed and controlled using standard methods like everything else. If somebody can program it, somebody else can too.

Christ, I remember them saying this shit in the late 70's, and again the 80's speed density, then 80's MAF systems, then OBD and OBDII, trust me they'll break the code.

Maybe, but I think we'll get to the point that they won't. As they begin to add more connectivity, drive by wire and auto pilot type features, hackers become more and more of a concern for manufacturers.
