Done that at least twice. One time it was basically accessible when I opened the door (IIRC). Yeah magnet is tricky. Dropped the battery clips a few times too.

dropped one bumper bolt down the front of the engine bay and searched for a hour, even took the undertray off. Turns out it was in the fan shroud.

Was installing the Redline hood strut kit in my 2016 and next thing I know my ratchet is sliding through the gap in the fender near the hinge. Is pulling the wheel well the best way to retrieve it? Now I know why people shove a towel there when working on the engine bay. One more rant: Who designed the plastic nut/clip that holds the battery cover on? I think I've dropped (4) now somewhere in the engine bay.

Can't help you with the dropping of tool, I have a magnetic tool, and a 3 finger claw tool to get dropped tools, bolts.
As for the battery cover push pins.
I was thinking, A fidge/freezer door seal, magnet once you take it out of the seal, is flat thin long magnet.
I was thinking the flat magnet glued to the edge of the battery cover, to follow the metal edge of the car the push pins go through. to hold the cover, instead of those push pins from hell .

i've retrieved dropped plastic battery cover fasteners with chewing gum on the end of a telescopic magnet, but never a magnetic telescope.

Been their, Done it. To save time, Jack, remove wheel, pull back wheel liner, remove socket, put liner back on, install tire, down jack and call it a Day. Shit happens. Good Luck

Sometimes you just gotta be thankful you didn’t crack bolt by over tightening it. Consider yourself lucky.

I dropped the hood bolt down there installing hood struts. My telescopic magnet kept sticking to the side of the fender, ended up wrapping the side of the magnet with painters tape, worked like a charm I was able to get it all the way down to grab the bolt.

Liners are pretty easy to remove and you may find other surprise goodies hidden inside.

Wrapping the side with Electrical tape works great also

I dropped a nutdriver down the pass side fender hole, fishing with various magnetic pick up tools didn't work and made it worse...knocked it to lower part of wheel well.

Was prepared to pull the fender liner, but on inside corner where the front of the running board meets the back of the fender liner is a gap, I was able to put my finger in there and guide the tip of the nutdriver out the gap then pluck the entire thing out.

Didn't have to remove wheel or pull liner

What I didn't find was at least 2 of those battery cover fasteners. My theory is if they make it all the way down to the wheel well where the fasteners for the fender liner are, something light like a battery cover fastener may just get sucked out, or it may get blown down the running board somehow.

Magnetic items didn't work for me either; they were attracted to other, nearby items.

Tools like the grabber work. The wire is used to secure the grabber, so it is not lost in the process.:giggle:

Now, before any work is done, I either stuff old t-shirts in these areas or cover with a fender protector.

Losing the battery cover push pins is definitely a right of passage. The very first time I opened my hood to install a strut tower brace, I needed to move a battery cable out of the way. Within 30 seconds, 2 of the 3 push pins were gone, never to be seen again.

FWIW there's a reasonably current thread on the battery cover pins. You can get like 30 of them for $12 on Amazon.
