I had to borrow a scan tool from someone recently and want to pick up my own. Does anyone have a recommendation on good brands / models, as well as where to buy? There are tons of them on Amazon and other online sources, ranging from 20 bucks to hundreds. I don't need a pro tool, but certainly a good quality one that at least captures all the relevant engine codes. It would be nice to have access to other codes, such as ABS, but not at 10-20x the cost.

I like to use OBD Link mx+ with Forscan on my laptop. Seems to be able to access all of the modules on the car and allows you to program some functions. But it isn't a standalone product (you need a phone or laptop).

I'm sure there are some really nice standalone scanners out there too, but this one meets my need for ~ $130.

Edit for link:

They indicate you can get into the ABS module - since you specifically called that out.

That is the adapter I use, I don't trust Bluetooth and it is cheaper to boot.

The cable will probably work, but the Bluetooth is so much more convenient. I think Fred was asking if he needed the cable on top of the Bluetooth module. Its either or, not both.

The cable posted in this thread will work. It is approved by the ForScan team.

I've been using it since Jan of 21.

I'm guessing USB should work with a Surface Pro because I use the Bluetooth adapter and Forscan with my Surface Pro just fine. Can't imagine a scenario where it would work with BT but not USB.
