someone who works at O'Reilly Auto parts and owns a GT500 just posted this on FB and says that it has a metal inner brace. AFAIK, the only other metal inner brace is the OEM FL-2087. he also put a magnet inside and it stuck to the inner brace. and the filter is only $16.99...

So maybe good news. I work at Orielly and was needing an oil filter like many of you for my GT500. Fords was special order and we couldn’t get one, same with the dealerships. I check constantly to see if we carry a new one and today I saw royal purple made one. I ordered just to see if it would work and I believe it will. When I compared the GT350 to 500 filter, only difference I saw was the inner tube or brace was metal on the 500. I’m guessing this is because more pressure due to it being supercharged but I could be wrong. When I inspected the royal purple, it is also metal tubing or brace. So yeah I believe this will work guys

A preliminary analysis from the photo.....

It looks like there is a steel sleeve in there on the inside of the plastic reinforcement. I don't see why this wouldn't be a suitable alternative.

ok we'll wait to hear what you say once it's in your hands. i thot the funniest part of the FB comments on this post was one guy asking, "i just wanna know how a guy who works at OReillys drives a GT500..." lol

just passing along info guys, the guy said it's metal. he said a magnet stuck to it. i dont think magnets stick to plastic...just the messenger.
Every time I hear somebody use a magnet analogy I get uncomfortable (ie, stainless versus non-stainless, etc). The issue is, at least as far as the factory filter is concerned is, there are other components to the filter assembly that can attract a magnet. The filter media seam is pinched together with a steel insert and the media has screening on the inside too.

That RP filter looks like it has plastic reinforcement to me and I look forward to being wrong.

Yea, I will do a teardown on it. from the photo it appears to me that it has the plastic reinforced ribs like the 2062, but also another metal reinforcement tube inserted inside the filter. I don't think I'll do a video, but simply a step by step of the teardown and observations along the way.

There is no need to take this filter apart. The insert is plastic.

Oh, and a followup. I was told by my dealership that if your engine took a dump and they found an aftermarket filter, the warranty would most likely be voided.

I suspect the magnet was sticking to the wire mesh screen on the inside of the filter. The backside of the filter paper on the inside of the filter has a wire mesh, much like a screen. The reinforcement is a free floating plastic insert.

Here is a photo of a FL2087 filter as a comparison.

For what it's worth to anyone here, I changed my oil today and as I can't find the FL2087 I bought both the RP and the amsoil ones. Since they're the exact same, I used the amsoil. Did some very aggressive driving after the install and making sure levels were good and no leaks, everything was fine. Normal pressures. I don't track it, so I think this is fine to hold over while waiting for the ford ones to come back in stock. While it may not have the metal insert like the ford one does, they do feel like solid products.

Like I said, I also did some snooping around today and was told by my dealership that if the engine should grenade itself and an aftermarket filter is found, you will own it.

Keep looking for that fl2087......
