Just wrapped up a great day at Auto Club Speedway, and in the garage two things occurred/noticed. One, After packing up for the day, the car wouldn’t start. This was after a very hot day of running hard. It wasn’t the battery because the electric would turn on (all dash lights operational, radio on, etc.) but the motor wouldn’t crank. After hunting around it seemed the culprit was a loose connector going into the starter (I think), and there seemed to be a connector which looked loose going into the alternator. It was on the right hand side of the engine, in the space almost directly under the back bottom of the airbox. After letting the engine cool and pushing the connector on the alternator in a little, the car turned over but it was stumbled slightly before finally cranking over. Anyone had experience with this?

Second, has anyone split their R front splitter horizontally? Thinking about OEM replacements is not fun.

My starter (the solenoid) would do the same thing after each session until the car sat for awhile to cool (15-20 minutes with the hood open). After talking to a tech and the dealer, he said that he's changed lots of starters on these cars for this issue. He told me it's because they are close to the header. He told me he could change it, but it wouldn't fix the issue.

So once I put it up on the lift, I was shocked with how close the solenoid is to not only the header, but the collector part of the header (hottest point). I bought some starter wrap off amazon to install.

Thank you! I’ve heard many stories about the starter solenoid and your post confirms this seems to be the issue.

A DEI wrap for your starter will help a lot. I haven't had an issue since I put one on.
Bought last night, shipping today :like: . I knew I recalled reading about you having this issue. Thank you!

How much of a PITA is it to pull the header to wrap it?

Stock headers aren't fun, but doable. Aftermarket headers (i.e. long tubes), are brutal. Worth it, IMHO. I saw a 115* difference in surface temp between the wrap and bare header.
