Hey Guys,

2018 Mustang GT PP1, with the MT-82 Manual... about 18,700 miles on it right now. I've had all sorts of "things" happen with this car. Nothing that has disabled it... but it has a really bad whine in it... along with the 2k rattle, she sounds rough at low speeds and not really good unless you are fully sending the car. I got kicked out of one Ford dealership after bringing it there 3 times... the lead mastertech told me not to come back because the car is fine and to "go somewhere else". Another dealership agree'd this car isn't quite right and put together a case with Ford Customer Service for me... that was 1 1/2 months ago, now they just avoid any contact with me and never proceeded with Ford.

I was able to borrow a "decent" scan tool, just for the heck of it. My knowledge of scan tools and all these values is really vague... I took a 3 min video of all my values and I'm reaching out to you guys.... If anyone is willing to watch this video and tell me their opinion on what they see here.... how's the vehicle look on paper?

I'd be interested to see what you think. I also did a "quick scan" where it scans 24 things and there were zero faults.

Thank you all very much for your time, I'm interested to see what you think.

So the scanner doesn't show any trouble-codes at all ? What kind of things are going on that makes you think something is going on with the car ?

The car is embarrassing to drive through parking lots, at low speeds it sounds like it has massive piston slap but it’s probably just the DI and high pressure fuel pump.

The car now has a massive whine at all RPMs on top of the 2k rattle and it just doesn’t sound right. Also think the car burns excessive oil. Had almost no oil left during my last oil change after only 4K miles of driving. I think the dealer didn’t get it full last oil change, if they did then I have major problems.

I realize a scan tool might not pick up that data but I wanted to see if anything looked wrong on some extra data so I was hoping someone could help me read the data.

How about posting a video of the noises the car is making.

Couple things
1) These engines are noisy.
2) The dealership doesn't care about your car as much as you do.

My 2017 had the "BBQ tick" extremely bad. So bad that I thought for sure something was wrong. I ended up blowing it up on the track last year. When I tore it down, literally everything inside the engine was perfect except for detonation damage on pistons 7-8 and some cylinder scoring that resulted from that. I could still see ink stamps on some of the rod/main bearings with ~20k miles on it. I still have no idea what the "BBQ tick" was from.

I rebuild it with forged pistons and better rods. No more BBQ tick but now I have the 2k rattle just like the gen 3 engines have.

I've just saying all this to show that some of the absurd noises these engines make are harmless (BBQ tick), and despite a meticulous build with a torque plate honed block and align honed mains I get this ridiculous 2k rattle. Engine runs amazing however.

Id suggest checking compression yourself which might clue you in on the oil burning issue. If you find something off then you can proceed with the dealer. Do an oil analysis and cut open the oil filter to see if the engine is eating itself. You can get the kits from a variety of places: Blackstone-labs is easy, or you can order a Wix kit from Amazon for $14.

Did you by change measure all the rod big end side clearances and the crankshaft fore/aft clearance on that engine?

Good info here. I actually had a lot from Blackstone and I was able to get a size-able sample from my last oil change. I never sent it in, but do you think it would be good to still send in? It’s been sitting around for a full month.

Rod side clearance spec is 0.013 to 0.020"
Stock was 0.015" / 0.015" / 0.016" / 0.018"
With Manley H-beam rods I got 0.018" on all 4 journals.

I didn't measure crank end play with the stock bearings.

You took the sample when you were draining the oil during your change? Shake it up and send it in. Nothing happened to it in the container.

If you mean you got the sample from your oil drain pan after the change, then it's probably not worth it unless you keep it super clean.

Sounds like it has the 2K rattle pretty bad. What's it sound like when engine is fully warmed up and it's idling?
Pretty much the same, it might barely get a little bit better but it sounds horrible driving through parking lots and going slow. Most of the time I’ll run in 2nd gear at like 5 mph because it does t sound as bad or even coast in neutral as much as I can.

Correct, I took the sample as the oil was being drained out during my last oil change.

I'll put it on some big speakers later but I didn't hear anything out of what Ford would call normal.

Anything short of rods blowing out the side of the block is considered a "normal noise".
