Could you explain what prevents someone in the exact same situation with an auto from shifting it into neutral in the same amount of time?

You think that pushing the clutch isn't faster considering your foot is on it all the time than fumbling for the automatic shifter? I don't. Plus, going in and out of gear with an automatic in bad road conditions versus a clutch with complete control of what gear your in... Not on this planet. No way can you get into neutral as fast or switch gears.

My point was to answer the question which is better a stick or an automatic. I was replying to the response that driving a stick is too difficult.

Just because you drive an automatically, certainly doesn't mean you drive well either.

You ask ANYONE that has driven on black ice would they prefer an automatic where you don't control the spin of your wheels or a stick where you can pop it into neutral and take the engine out of the equation and see what they say. Your engine control is not even in the same ball park with an automatic.

I've been there and watched cars hit their break lights and spin out. I even watched are car make a right turn because they hit a dry patch on literally drive down an embankment.

First, idiots are going to be idiots no matter the car or transmission.

Second, It's literally the same method to take a manual out of gear as it is to take an automatic out of gear via gear selector so I don't get this point at all. Yes you can just throw the clutch to the floor but I'm reading your words as if you want to take it entirely out of gear. Edit: you just cleared this up.

I've driven over black ice in many different vehicles. Most were manual transmissions because that's my preference but I will say the vehicle I felt most comfortable with on any color of ice was the 2010 Raptor witch only came in auto. It had big knobby tires terrible for ice but great for mud/snow but the electronic nannies did everything perfectly. You could drive an autocross on ice in that thing because it just didn't let you slide much at all no matter how ham fisted you were on the inputs.

Unless you're on a track, regardless of black ice or not, the control of a manual transmission IMHO exceeds any automatic.

I understand that keeping any part of your body in the same spot means it relaxes naturally therefor placing weight on the pedal. That and resting you hand on the stick are both bad habits to have. The dead pedal or drivers rest pedal is where my foot stays unless the clutch is needed.

I can absolutely shift an auto into neutral faster than you can depress the clutch.

If your foot is on the dead pedal and both hands are on the wheel, how is it faster to move your hand to the gear selector (same for manual and auto) or move your foot to floor the clutch pedal? It all seems about the same to me. Really, it's moot if you're driving like a sane person and respecting your environment.

It takes lots of practice and time. I don’t live in the country,

just pop on over to Oakton Community College (Skokie or Des Plains) and you'll have acres of empty parking lot to practice in.

Honestly, when driving over ice I don't depress the clutch. I let off the gas but not all the way. No acceleration or deceleration, try to keep it balanced and steer as needed, same for hydroplaning. Transmission type doesn't matter. Respecting the conditions matter about 10 thousand percent more.

Next time your over black ice, remember the stupidity of your comment as you slide off the road.

My ability to use the clutch is vastly faster with a hand-clutch, ie on a motorcycle. Actually I had already pulled in the clutch just in case. Didn't stop me from wiping out on I-94 at Winnetka Road, bike spinning head of me and I'm on my belly looking up at 3 lanes of oncoming traffic.
