Coming from the V6 world I am new to the EB. Does upgrading the intercooler lean out the stock tune? If not I'd rather do this mod versus exhaust etc.

The tune doesn’t care about the intercooler. A better intercooler will help reduce air temps going into the cylinders. Because of this the ecu will allow for more timing and power. Cooler air is always better.

Stock intercooler results in heat soak which causes highly unpredictable throttle. 0-60 can vary by 1-2s or more. The IC is the Achilles heel of the car. It can drop 50hp and pull timing resulting in a sluggish car.

It does not lean out the tune. If anything it is safer than the OEM intercooler due to the fact you will experience much less timing pull due to heat and pre-detonation (knock). Knock is your enemy. Remember your MAP sensors are located on the intake manifold and the intercooler output (cold side), so your intercooler isn't part of the air/fuel ratio calculation. It can be a contributor to response lag though if it has poor flow characteristics or the volume has been increased without a corresponding increase in flow.

Get the intercooler over exhaust. It should be your first mod on this car. Makes all the difference in the world and how the car should have came from the factory.

Thanks for the clarification guys, intercooler it is. I'm thinking about getting the ATM, ETS, or CVF. So far it looks like a tough call between the first two. I'll continue to research the best one for my goals.

Decided to go with the ETS intercooler after doing tons of research as it fits my price point and seems to be a good bang for my buck. Wanted the ATM but $700 was just right out of my price range. Can't wait to see the results!

Since this is the ATM thread, decided to post a picture of my new arrival. It turns out I couldn't get the Levels or ETS cores in my desired timeframe so I bit the bullet and got the ATM. Holy moly, this thing is a beast and well built. Can't wait to get it in when I get my car back; the car is currently at dealership since it threw a wrench light and went into limp mode for no reason. :(

@whatdoyoufeedit?

The throttle sensors are finicky. There is a complex set of sensors measuring pedal position and throttle body open/close percentage. I had same issue but upon restart, the error went away. I scanned via the Ford Procal software (same as Ford Cal) and came up with a P0068. Tech at my dealer said Ford is having trouble with the throttle body sensors... if they are off by a tiny bit they go into limp mode. It hasn’t happened since for me but he said if it happens again to bring it in.

Thank you for the heads up Cxp. It turns out the code was for a knock sensor, the tech told me I may have got a batch of bad gas and the fuel tested high for ethanol content. They informed me it was a knock sensor code 0668B iirc and that the knock sensor caught it before any damage was done. As soon as I got the car back I filled up with Shell 93 Vpower (always used Exxon 93 Synergy). A bit confused as I was not hot-rodding it and stayed away from store brand gas but it was like 102* the day it happened (more reason to go get the IC installed). I will try getting this monster installed this weekend and post pics of the completed install.

As mentioned I said I would post pictures of the completed install once I worked out all of the boost leak kinks. I did end up using the CVF lower coupler for the hot-side (still would suggest a longer lower hot-side coupler for perfect fitment). The Boomba plenum spacer kit came with the throttle spacer so I didn't have any issues with the cold side other than me mistakenly putting on the cold side on upside down the first time. Other than that, both the ATM IC and CVF hot/cold pipes receive 2 thumbs up by me! I also used the APS (ebay) lower mesh grille and some gutter guard from Lowe's to protect my $700 IC investment from bugs and rocks.

Any consensus on the ATM charge pipes? I stayed with stock but may upgrade these later.
I went with the ATM silicone charge pipes after my hard pipes pushed and pulled my ETS intercooler and broke the tabs and clips and destroyed my condenser. Can't say a negative thing about them. No more stressed out intercooler kit from engine movement. Half the amount of clamps and places to leak from. Perfect fitment.

Just installed my new to me ATM ic yesterday and am really pleased with the result. Very well designed and the fitment was like butter. Mounting bolts to the frame, inlet and output pipes attached with 3" t- bar clamps ...and back together. PP car WITH shutters(2015) and shutter motor zip tied to cable harness behind bumper. Kept the stock pipes for now. No CELs, and runs 5-10° above ambient temp. It's A BIG cooler(freaking massive, heavy) , and very will built. New tune to come!

Your going to be nothing but happy with it. I'm still amazed how well this car pulls in 105 degree temps. This time last year it was a dog.

At least you guys in AZ and TX have dry heat, on the East Coast it's that heat with nasty humidity that comes along with it. The intercooler has been no doubt the best investment and I'll even say the factory one is almost unusable for even a DD in extreme high temps.
