No image from the bottle (from work), but here's a link directly to the product data bulletin. Amsoil was 931-C compliant even before Ford changed the spec for the car (used to be 931-B) But it's backwards compatible if you have a '15-'16 still calling for -B.

Unfortunately, that's the vague language I was referring to. It says "Use Amsoil ..." which is not a declaration of quality, it's just words. The reason i say that is that all of the Signature Series oils on the list show API SN PLUS. However, if you go to the API website and look up Amsoil products that are actually API approved, you'll discover that none of the Signature Series oils are listed because they're not actually approved. Amsoil XL and OEM oils plus some of their diesel products are listed, but that's it.

Link: https://engineoil.api.org/Directory/EolcsResultsDetail?accountId=-1&companyId=10079&resultsUrl=/Directory/EolcsResults?accountId=-1&companyName=amsoil

Similarly, even though they call out Dexos 1 Gen 2, there are no Amsoil products listed by GM as approved: https://www.gmdexos.com/owner/brands/dexos1/index.html

Hence my question - what does the label on the bottle say about Ford 931C approval? Does it do what the Lucas label does and say that it meets the Ford specification?

Hmm...after further research it does appear that AMSOIL uses some lawyer-ey language. "Use in" application vice "meets or exceeds". This is might just because they didn't get an official certification (which I assume has costs associated with it) and is probably fine. But I did find that Castrol Edge Supercar 5W50 meets the Ford WSS-M2C931-C and is recommended for the Ford GT.

If you can find it.

You can find it, but it is very pricey. You can get it from Walmart's web site, but it runs about $15/ltr in quantity. Amazon has the 10W-60 for $135/case (of liters). That's still a lot higher than Motorcraft which is what I have been using.

All I see is the 10W-60 in the US. There are some on Ebay and from non-US distributors, but I haven't been able to find any US retailer.

Yep no us seller. Plus shipping is almost $50.

You can also use 5w-50 edge. I know is not "recommended" by Ford but it is still a good oil and works just as good if not better than Ford oil.

This is key and happens all the time. For several years, none of the SSO oils had any certification. And like many others have stated about similar products, does it mean that the oil fails to meet the spec requirements? Absolutely not. It means that Amsoil, for whatever reason, chose not to pay for or pursue the certification for that product. And yes, the bottle has the same language as the spec sheet. Guess it's a personal choice as to the product being good enough or not. While I agree with you @JAJ, I personally will not loose any sleep over the labeling. Amsoil is clearly a quality product that I know from talking to people that it meets the spec. Labeling? Semantics? Sales pitch? Marketing? Who knows...still a top shelf product and I personally think there's enough substance there that Ford could not hold against you for using it.

I actually think that Amsoil makes good products. It's just that in an age where people are constantly bombarded by internet scams and wild and baseless marketing claims, it seems odd that they wouldn't take the simple step of at least validating the performance claims that are easiest to fact check. They're selling a premium product at a premium price - folks won't quibble if the price goes up a few cents a bottle to cover licensing costs. Besides, I'd like to think that they actually tested this stuff using industry standard tests - from there it's a short hop to getting recognition from the standards bodies that they passed. The whole thing makes no sense to me.

Meanwhile, back to the Lucas product, which Lucas says "meets" the Ford spec. That claim means that they went through the Ford test procedure and provided the results to Ford for validation. Of course the best part is that Lucas is also the least expensive - it's $5.50 a quart in 5-gallon pails.

It's too bad that Ford doesn't publish a list of approved oils the way that GM, BMW, Porsche and others do. Based on the testing requirements language in the 931C spec sheet, they should have the information. It'd be nice if they published it.

So I ordered the 5 gallon bucket of Lucas 5w-50. It took about a month to come in as it was on backorder. It has a different consistency than Motorcraft and it made my engine quiet down on cold starts.

It cost a little over $100, and came with free shipping. After changing my oil last week I have come to the conclusion that in order to truly buy Lucas in bulk you have to buy the 55 gallon drum. I used a little more than half of the bucket for the oil change including soaking my filter. If the Lucas burns like the Motorcraft I will need two quarts between the next change(A quart every 1500 miles).

So factoring that, I will be a little more than two quarts short for the next change

You can mix approved oil - you can top up with Motorcraft if it comes to that. Don't worry - it's a good deal!

Actually had to do that on my last oil change, but Motorcraft was on back order everywhere, so I used Castrol.

It is a good deal though. The only oil at a similar price is Mobil One like the guy above mentioned, and maybe Quaker State.
that's 22 oil changes!
Not too bad huh? I just did the math though. Buying the drum is $98 cheaper than buying 11, 5-gallon buckets, but the drum has a freight charge.

I will find out how much the freight charge is
