Whipple car runs bad - tune issues

Called my mechanic at the dealership who installed my parts. I'm having the car towed over to him and he is going to use the FORD IDS to reset my computer to as build date. Not going to charge me anything.

Going to do new plugs at the same time and make sure they are gapped to 0.28.

Hopefully everthing works out and I'll be able to load the new tune in.

I did notice the new version of flare as a record and analyze tab. Anyone use these yet?

bummed. i have 2 issues that are preventing me from downloading and installing the new tune for my 2017. i just called Whipple and they said i need to speak with Jeff, who is out today and not sure if he will be in tomorrow.

issue #1: when i launched the Flare tool today, it said an upgrade was available did i want to download and install it. i said yes. so it upgraded me from 1.94 to 3.0 (mac version). no issues there but when i go to 'open' the original tune to flash to stock, i get a java.io error that prevents the tune from opening. i tried the .flare file from both my local disk as well as the backup on the USB stick. ** i may try to downgrade back to 1.94 to get passed this issue but since issue #2 will prevent me from going any further anyway, i may just wait for Jeff to be back.... see screenshot below.

issue #2: the flare tool is asking for a password to get the new tune. i am usually really good with passwords and store them in a password manager app, but do not see one for Flare, Whipple or Micromotive... so i may need the password reset....

Did you register at mircomotive? Download the instructions from our site.

You don't have to go back to stock, you could technically just flash it and it will back up the file you have. Then, if you need to go to stock, you just have to direct it to the original stock file.

Yes, very easy but its only needed if you get some random misfire codes.

My vin # was no longer displaying up top within the flare program. When ever I tried to open a calibration or hit program it would just say unable to confirm vin.....if I tried to hit restore it said PCM null.

Dealer is going to use IDS tomorrow to load the stock tune back in. I'm assuming that will allow the flare program to populate the Vin and load the new tune.

Did you register at mircomotive? Download the instructions from our site.

You don't have to go back to stock, you could technically just flash it and it will back up the file you have. Then, if you need to go to stock, you just have to direct it to the original stock file.

thank you for the hint on where to proceed. yes, i had created the login back in december to retrieve the files for the original tune. i found my password in the browser cache!

so using the mac Flare tool i was able to download the new whipple tune. only difference in the file name is in the middle, 1-5 for the december version and 1-6 for today's.

unfortunately the mac Flare tool appears broken. i also downloaded and tested from my kid's macbook. same exact error.

on my macbook, i spun up my winblows VM and downloaded the Flare tool. here i was able to open both the december flare file and new one.

i did not 'program' the car though. it is 8pm and i am pretty sure all of my neighbors would be pissed off about having to do a crank relearn.

just to confirm, i do not need to do a crank relearn when i put the stock to tune back in but will need to do so when i program the new tune. correct?

when i did the original crank relearn, it took awhile, like 10+ minutes ?? i believe that is because i started the procedure with the engine cold? the instructions state:

Note that the engine must be at normal operating temp (160deg F+) to perform this test.

so warm the engine before even doing the programming?

Send us the file in the "support" folder called Whipple_Flare_V3.0.txt so we can look into.

Will look into. Yes you will know as it will set a code and turn the light on.

Dealer was able to load as built data back into PCM and load the new updated Whipple tune.

As suspected, plugs were never gapped and were found to be at approx .40 as opposed to the .28.

They are putting a new set of NGK plugs in for me.

Since the cats were damaged they are going to make it up by eating the labor cost of installing a set of Kooks 1 7/8 headers with non-green cats.

Ordered from Beefcake this morning, so hopefully we'll have them in by early next week.

I guess every cloud has a silver lining....
