I've seen people talk about having to figure out CJ intake clearance, and other people saying the CJ did not give much gains. Same for a 92MM TB.

Has anyone looked into just porting the stock IM so that they don't have to worry about clearance issues?

Seriously!?! It may not be a difficult question but rather perplexing.
No it's not. If you want more flow why not just port the manifold? It's not like it's a new idea or anything, just wondering if anyone looked into it. Probably be easier than getting a CJ manifold to work as you know it fits already. Maybe cheaper than a CJ also. If people are going as far as porting the heads why not match the intake?

You probably won't find much info because there's little evidence that any part of the intake and throttle body is constricting and offers noticeable gains in power. This is one of the biggest intake assemblies I've ever seen on a production car, and most modifications have demonstrated diminishing returns in the area. You're better off looking into the headers end.

LOL! OK! How does one go about porting a plastic intake manifold and how does porting help with clearance with the strut bar?

So air IN isn't an issue, more of an air OUT issue? That explains it. Thanks!

I was just about to pull out my Dremel tool when I realized:

1) I didn't do hundreds of hours of CFD analysis on this manifold
2) I don't have a spare manifold and heads to do flow bench testing
3) I don't have a spare engine and electronics to do dyno testing
4) And I don't have a flow bench or Dynamometer

I put it back and figure the Ford ICE engineers probably came up with the best solution for this Voodoo race engine. Any changes I make will surely hose-up something elsewhere along that wide, flat torque curve.

I love the idea of porting the intake, but headers as well as the heads might need work too.

There was a similar conversation on the engine mods forum and the conclusion I saw (it made sense to me) was that increasing the duration on the cam lobes might be the best way to start. [MENTION=16326]nastang87xx[/MENTION]

Now we just need to get Comp on board!

Some people just feel compelled to modify for the sake of it. I'm with zombo. A ton of R&D went into the design of this engine. Other than the short list of mods needed to realize the potential of this car, there isn't a whole lot under the hood that needs attention.

Porting the OEM Coyote intakes(as well as the Boss and CJ intakes) is nothing new. While it doesn't yield huge gains there are some noticeable areas that can be improved upon especially around the injector ports where the two halves of the manifold are pressed together.


The fact that the original intake manifold does not have clearance issues like one would run into when swapping to a CJ intake is the reason for the OP mentioning clearance issues.

I agree with both of these and well said. However, the Voodoo had to meet quite a few lame emissions regulations and Ford developed it to make as much power as possible while still meeting the regulations. For that reason I still think cams could possibly make significant improvements.
