Today was looking good. Got the (slightly) uprated front pads delivered, had the oil and filter all ready to go.

Got to the garage, took the sump plug out, started looking around and thought "there's rather a lot of oil round here"

Then it clicked...maybe I should have a look at the oil cooler...

Nope. Turns out that was fine! :hail:

Dropped the car as couldn't see any obvious leak underneath...poked around up top...and what's this? That shouldn't be there...

Yes, that is a pool of oil in the bottom of my PMAS airbox! :eyebulge:

The filter was fairly well-soaked and upon checking the inside of the intake tube there was a fair bit in there too.

Everyone present (owner of the garage plus others that all look after proper WRC cars!) was of the opinion that 20mins round Silverstone's national circuit last week was enough to cause oil surge and get a few gulpfuls up the passenger-side breather and then onwards into the intake.

Although I have a UPR catchcan fitted to the driver's side, everywhere I read it seems hardly anyone bothers with the passenger side as there's even less coming through that side. So I didn't bother.

Moral of the story is: if you're going to track your car, FIT CATCHCANS TO BOTH SIDES!

By the time I'd finished diagnosing and fretting about my potentially needing to go back to a main dealer(!) I couldn't be arsed to fit the pads. Well, that and the fact that they weren't actually as far worn as I thought, so seemed little point.

So that's third oil change at 20K and front pads still going strong.

As always, big thanks to my 24hr tech helpline in confirming things Gibbo205 and the guys at CJP Autosport in Basingstoke. :D

That's weird?? I would have thought the oil mist would have been drawn into the inlet? She's not breathing heavy is she mate??

It was drawn in; that's the issue.

Being on a track with 3 high speed R/H corners means the oil surge got the level right up to and over the breather, so it wasn't just mist that was sucked through but actual gulpfuls of oil!

With no catchcan on that side it all went through into the intake and was excessive enough to make it's way against the airflow, through the filter, and pool in the bottom of the airbox.

Car has never used a drop of oil in the whole 20K miles it's done and as Gibbo pointed out, if the oil level was right at it's max level, then that wouldn't have helped the oil surge. Gibbo has a can fitted on the passenger side and despite it never collecting anything more than a couple of drops AND him only completing a few laps before his brakes faded, his caught a fair amount. So it's safe to say if you're doing some track sessions, get a catchcan on the passenger side too!

All cleaned up now and ready to rock again! :D

24hr helpline! :D

Glad its all OK buddy, fitted another 350 TB today and the car is still knocking its tits off. :(

For whatever reason my car disliked the 350 TB, both Lund and AED not come across it before, but stock TB on and she is all well. Something is a-miss somewhere maybe being caused by our funky headers.

But in short any time I get on power at high RPM or change gear at high RPM the knock sensor sits on +6 keeping timing under 20 degrees, probably got less power than stock when it does that.

Probably just time to fit stock TB and forget about the 350 one, by looks of things.

Wow!! Thanks for the advice!! The good old RB26 on early GTR's used to fill the head with oil and starve the sump, then hard braking into a left bend would cause the crank to starve, sometimes enough to shag or spin a bearing!! (Ask me how I know):headbonk::headbonk:

They never did this though!!

Anyone know if the Race cars are dry sumped?

I would be amazed if they're not at least baffled, if not dry-sumped.

If I can manage this after just 20 mins then it's in no way an adequate system for a proper race car (not just one with stickers!).

They fit both sides to the 350R don't they? Guess that's why.

In my Escort days my hi capacity high pressure oil pump used to drain the sump such that when I braked for the time control at the end of a section the pressure would go from 65psi to zero. Should have got rid of the steering lock really, would have frightened the marshalls and my navigator less when I turned it off as we approached the control :D.

So in preparation for the Southerner's victory of this weekend's Tour of Scotland Lone Survivor, I serviced my PMAS filter today.

Now it was overdue already, having been fitted at around 5K miles, but the slight mishap at Silverstone meant it REALLY needed a good service.

Big thanks to kapiteinlangzaam as he's already had to endure the heartache we all know and love of researching what to buy, where from, how to use it properly etc etc.

The process is as you would expect; remove filter, bang it a few times to remove any loose crud, douse it with cleaner, rinse, repeat until happy with result, then follow the procedure for oiling.

Here's the engine oil from Silverstone STILL coming out (this was about the third rinse):

Drying off after the final rinse:

This is where the fun really started.

S&B (who do the oil and cleaner) supply this, which, as you can see, consists of a trigger pump for the cleaner, and a squeezy bottle of oil and an applicator tube:

Steeda UK supply this:

Issues with the Steeda kit: cleaner is a pump-bottle rather than trigger, meaning eventually the cleaner dribbles down onto your hand so you have to keep stopping to wipe it as you can't hold the bottle.

The oil is in an aerosol which wouldn't be so bad except there is a VERY specific amount of oil to be added to the PMAS filter i.e. 54g. Yes, GRAMS. Not ML. Very helpful. Not.

So I had to find a suitable container to place onto a scale and then spray 54g of oil into it before sucking it up with a large syringe I had to source as Steeda don't include any kind of applicator. Needless to say, when spraying an aerosol into a confined space, the backpressure then sprays a fine mist everywhere. More mopping required.

Then the syringe started playing silly buggers and made more of a mess of the kitchen and my t-shirt. :frusty: Not happy by this point.

Eventually got the filter oiled up and reinstalled on the car, fully expecting a noticeable difference in performance. ;) And I was not disappointed! :D

I thought it would be a bit of a placebo effect but the car definitely felt perkier and was somewhat borne out by the fact that previously the difference between IAT and ambient used to fluctuate between 2 and 3 degrees. Now it got down to 1 degree and for a time I even saw a difference of -1!

So despite all the kerfuffling around, I am most pleased with my day's work. :D

Mate your maf sensor is probably caked in oil, get some maf cleaner and give it a clean buddy.

Your a patient man, I'd of just purchased a new filter, they are a royal pain to re-oil. :D

Yeah, I gave it a damn good clean when I changed the oil last week. Barely any oil made it's way THROUGH the filter and into the intake but it's totally clear now anyway and the car runs better than ever so I'm happy there's no issues.

Know that now, don't I?! :frusty: :D

Like most maintenance though, most satisfying when finished.

Good stuff, its one advantage of stock air box, stays clean and even better you can't see it when it is dirty. :D
