Exhaust pops, burbles, flames

This even possible on our cars (GT specifically?)

It amazes me all the time that my Focus RS legit shoots flames on the shifts, and has of course the engineered in pops and burbles, and yet my even more raucous and powerful Mustang kinda has none of that going on. Not that it's bad or anything, just figured it's almost a part of modern cars now a days, re-engineering in a little "stank" along with the engineered piped in exhaust sounds. lol

My car did it a little before I built the top end. Now, with the big cams, deleted VCT, and LT's it burbles and pops very nicely when dragging a gear.

i only at full bore will get a exhaust pop if my car has a full tank of E85 in it. Just kinda wish there was more of it, and even with regular fuel.

I know it's a gimmick, but dammit, i like my gimmicks.

My otherwise std (at the time) GT would pop and crackle a LOT with a Ford Racing X pipe and Roush ABs. Proper whip-crackers too.

Now running a Magnaflow X pipe, and itll do it very, very occasionally and nowhere near the same volume.

What system is the Focus employing to get flames out of the exhaust.... I presume its still got its CATs in place?

Would also like to know more about this. My S-type'd GT doesn't pop on overrun but SOMETIMES (and I have not been able to figure out why) it'll pop once so loud it scares everyone around including myself. Would love to be able to control it as it happened next to a cop once, thankfully he was super cool.

no it's catless. Has a different catback on it now than in this video, but this was with a catless DP and stock catback.

Now with an aftermarket catback, the pops and burbles and flames are still there, just wakes the dead now. Car makes 70 more torque at the wheels than my Mustang. It pulls like a damn lorry.

Well id say the lack of cats might have a lot to do with it..... nay everything to do with it... would have been handy info for the first post ;)

If you are running cats the only 'safe' way to get flames is of course to inject fuel (and ignite it) after the cats....

For guaranteed flames youll need either an incredibly rich mixture, or to flash the ECU not to cut fuel at high revs with a closed throttle.

And a straight pipe.

You can program a lot of that stuff in I'm sure with a tuner. Just like it was said above, it's a pretty rich mix.

my Mustang is also FBO and catless, so it does kinda bum me out that it doesn't have quite the raucousness of the little hot hatch, but at least it's marginally faster in a straight line.

Almost surprised something like this hasn't been engineered in yet.

My SRT-4 would do it once I removed the cat with the Stage 1 ECM/Injectors. Pretty sure it requires either straight through piping or muffler, no cat and excess fuel that gets ignited in the exhaust. Likely something that a tune could provide if you really wanted it.

I'm fine with the Coyote 5.0 not having flames... It's sounds WAY better than the Focus RS.

Turbos are easy because the turbo hot side would be hot enough to ignite rich mixture coming out of the engine.
N/As are still possible but harder.

how are the rs's clutches handling launching?

i know my old evo x and wrx's couldn't handle many launches without burning up the clutch or snapping the transmission.
