The automatic would have to be significantly faster than the manual for me to pick it. Manual transmissions are fun as hell to drive daily and on twisty roads. I just wouldn't want to lose that same thrill with an automatic, but I would honestly have to drive it to make that judgement.

Would also be great if they did a square tire setup and not this staggered setup on the PP for 2018. Some of us like tire rotations, lol.

I'm over here hoping for the opposite and I daily mine lol.....I still don't understand why the mustang's wheel offerings are so poor. IMO the PP should come with some very agressive wheels/tires (look at the 1LE) with maybe an optional squared setup. I still cant believe that my 2014 5.0 came with 235s :frusty:

Agreed. Plus, most cars handle best square.

That's an impossibly vague (and inaccurate) blanket to throw around.
"Most" cars are setup to understeer. Wider rear tires increase understeer. Also, it's much more difficult to get a staggered setup neutral, much less keep it neutral after several laps.

In a nutshell, square setups are much more neutral and predictable, which leads to more linear responses at their limits.

What's the reason for them insisting on a staggered setup?

For the record, Ford has been weird lately with their wheel/tire choices...not just for the 'stang.

Tire selection is a delicate dance. You got the needs/wants of engineering staff, the bean counters are involved and then you got the tire companies who want to win the bid. Much like everything in mass production its a total mess.

Could be as simple as wanting a little more rear traction when the gear ratio is bumped to 3.73.

Obviously the Mustang handles better with a non-square setup. Otherwise Ford would have put a square setup on the GT350 and GT350R. Both of them have staggered tire sizes.

Wanting the handling to be as neutral as possible for good cornering on the road course, yes. Most Mustangs are under tired - especially in the rear. It makes the car less expensive, but swapping out wheels and tires is one of the best mods to do to our cars.

That new 10-speed auto Ford and GM developed is not a dual-clutch right?

The engineers set a target and then the bean counters choose the least expensive option that fulfills that requirement. There are some exceptions but that is generally how it goes.

Gas millage. Narrower tires means less rolling resistance so better gas millage.

The 1LE is a full blown track pack.

The PP is a "Performance Pack"...it's meant to increase street performance while not sacrificing comfort and daily usability.

In the case of the base GT, the 235/50R18 Nero (POS excuse for a "high-performance" all-season) was chosen because Pirelli quite literally gives Ford a steal on them: $45 a tire. The engineers responsible for the car's performance pleaded with the program leadership to at least fit it with 255 width as standard, to have acceptable performance for a performance street car (the 255/40R19 Nero delivers 0.90G lateral grip, the 235/50R18 0.83G :frusty:), but no.
