the thread is about texting, saw the video, and thought people might like to see how the UK is now handling the problem

I don't know about texting and driving since the MT stops that. But texting at red lights makes them change faster.

This is about as bad as I get, and even then, I use voice to text because I'm not going to be the guy who gets honked at for not going on green... As soon as the light turns, the phone is tossed in the passenger seat until parked or the next red light.

I just use Siri, even without CarPlay, Siri is still compatible with SYNC 3. She reads them out, and I can use voice commands to respond.

She usually gets it right....

I have no problems with texting that doesn't involve your hands or your eyes. Since 2013 IIRC, my Windows phones have been able to announce and offer to read texts via any car's blue-tooth. You can say read it or ignore it. If you say read, after its read you're asked if you are done, want to hear it again or want to respond. If you say respond, you're asked to dictate a response and after it's read back to you you're asked if you want to cancel, start over, add to it or send it. Neither hands or eyes are ever used for the texting.

The ability to initiate texts (or use any phone voice commands) was added later via a fake phone number for Cortana. You can initiate a call to Cortana just like a call to anyone else in your contacts. When she answers you can do virtually anything via voice that you could holding the phone but thru your car's microphone and speakers instead of the phone's.

Some will say texting can still be a distraction and I won't debate that with anyone who also refuses to talk to a passenger which in my mind is more distracting than listening or dictating a text. Conversation with a passenger requires more brain power than texting, emailing, postal mailing, semaphore or Morse code because it is real time. Example: if your GF texts you to ask if the pants she was wearing last night made her look fat, you don't have to worry about saying the wrong thing or not answering soon enough, or your facial expression, etc.. If she is sitting in the passenger seat and asks you the same thing, its DEFCON1 for your brain.

No heat or judgment implied - but when I'm in my car going somewhere, driving is exactly what I want to be doing at that moment, to the exclusion of just about everything else, and I really don't care to deal with external interruptions.

Only a couple of weekends ago I had the opportunity to sit down in a NJDOT-sponsored virtual reality demonstration dealing with this exact topic (aka "Just Drive" - their name for it, and the name of the "Just Drive 125" mile NASCAR race it was on display at).

You didn't get to control your virtual car, but from time to time a text screen was thrust up into your peripheral vision (peripheral if your eyes were looking down the road, that is). I am not kidding when I tell you that I just couldn't make myself actively look down at the phone even when there weren't any "situations" developing outside the "windshield".

It probably matters that every single car we've owned since the early 1970's has had a manual transmission, and that I probably shift more often than most to avoid either lugging or needlessly revving the engine. Live phone calls get handed off to my wife if she's there. Callers get to wait or leave a message if she isn't.

I hope to see it required in new devices. I wish they would fine texting and driving $5,000.00 for the first offense and automatic suspension for the second.

Once of my clients has a zero tolerance policy on cell phone use in the car. They can't really do anything about calls you make to others off site but if you call into a meeting or even call in to say you're going to be late and they can tell you're on the road you can be sacked on the spot. Even as a vendor I'm under the same regs when I'm on campus.

Apparently they recently implemented a texting ban in the parking lot for pedestrians. I was walking to the main building checking my phone for a meeting room number and one of the golf cart security men stopped me and told me no texting in the parking lot even on foot. They were giving warnings until Jan 1.

But we need to be careful about the definition of texting. Technically, texting is sending or receiving messages in text form. If the text is created with hands or read with eyes, its a tremendous danger while driving. But if incoming texts are read to you or if you generate text with your voice, its less of a danger than just talking to a passenger.

I've had my incoming texts announced to me and read to me totally hands free for many years in my cars. And I can dictate and send texts with just a single touch of a steering wheel button to initiate the process.

So texting per se is NOT a problem, but texting that uses your hands or eyes is a tremendous problem.

Being totally distracted (many kinds) while driving can fucking kill you and others when you least expect it. Texting is a large cause of accidents these days. Wake up pay attention when driving !!

Being distracted for a nanosecond can kill you, and others. I will never ever understand the "wisdom" of texting while driving. I've gotten really good at spoting them before they are danger to me...not keeping pace with traffic, unable to stay in their lane, head/eyes focused on their knees. Very similar to a drunk driver, and equally as deadly.

If you're ok with texting or doing anything distracting while you're meant driving, you're saying:

1 - I value x peoples' lives less than finding out what that message was on my phone.

2 - I am ok with someone else killing me for the same reason.

People who text and driver or use their motherf*@king device for whatever reason while moving down the road are complete idiots that have no business behind the wheel. Their driver's license should revoked for a year for every time they are caught doing it.
