OEM ripoffs.

I have MFT NAV and hate the idea of shelling out $150 each year for a map chip that is already nearly a year old. My 2015 A5 was digitized in 2014!

I also own a Jeep Wrangler. Dealer tried to get me to buy the NAV unit with bluetooth and voice commands, for an extra $1200. Annual updates cost more than $100. Instead, I bought a GPS unit with a screen one inch larger than the one in the Jeep. It also has bluetooth, with voice command, free traffic updates and free lifetime (twice a year) map updates for a one time cost of $250.

By the way it is made by the same company that provides Jeep with their NAV system.

i would only recommend getting the updates every 5 years or so. not enough changes in 1 year to warrant doing updates yearly. the nav in mine is almost 6 years old and i havent run into any roads that arent on it.

This thread honestly sums up why I opted to not get navigation added. My 2017 will come with carplay and I can just use my phone which will always be up to date, and cost me nothing. It honestly is the way to go for the future I think.

That's easy if you order but in my case I happened to find the perfect car I was looking for with the only caveat being the NAV. It was either take it or never run across the same combo again and have to settle for a car that had mostly what I didn't want.

Yea, it really is a bummer that the MY15 can't get carplay.

What does A7 represent? The area covered? The year? I see a few, but many don't indicate what year the maps are.
A is for the area (US/CAN). There is also a B that I saw which is US/MEX. 7 is the most current version.

The A5 was USA/Canada digitized in 2014 but released for 2015 vehicles; A6 released for 2016, A7 for 2017 models.

I actually just sent him a PM. Now I only need to convince my wife to let me spend the money on a new HU.

Then there's my brand new car that doesn't have the road my work is on.

I assume people have already tried this, but can't you just download the maps to the SD card or copy someone else's updated maps to your current card? I assume it must be encrypted or something.

I plan to upgrade to Sync 3 to get CarPlay in the future, but for now, I usually just use my phone because the factory NAV has failed me too many times!

I would only pay for a map update every few years or both a long road trip

It's not just the road changes but also POIs should be updated too

The 'A' cards are made by HERE company. I believe the cards are proprietary and cannot be duplicated.

What is weird, Garmin makes the NAV unit for Jeeps, and charges over $100/year for the updates. But also makes Garmin GPS units with lifetime free updates. People have figured out a simple method to download the free updates and write them to a USB memory stick which can then transfer them to the JEEP Nav units.
