waze allows you to navigate even without an internet connection, as long as you have the destination in history.

and actually yes, this just happened last week when we were at dingmans falls, PA. there was barely any reception there, but waze was able to get us out and back on the highway after visiting the falls.........
What to you mean in your history? Like you have had to have traveled to the destination prior? If so that kind of defeats the point. I know you can download your trip in google maps.

But, 'barely any reception' is different than no service. If there is no internet connection at all how the heck does it know where you are on the map? I am talking no Internet connection for more than an hour at a time. Does not seem possible to me that it could work in this situation even if all the map data was stored on your phone.

yes, like home, work, or any other destination that you navigated to.

all i know is that i set the destination in waze for dingman falls, it got us there, even though there was zero bars on the phone. then when it was time to leave, i opened waze, selected home, then off we went.

i don't worry about it too much since im usually never around any places that dont have cell reception. i'll continue to enjoy waze on a daily basis.

edit: btw, if you didn't already know, iphones have had a GPS chip in it since the iphone 3G. it only needs wifi or cell service when it's using AGPS (assisted gps)

I don't think it will work when your phone actually says 'no service'. There is no way it could.

At any rate, you said you couldn't understand why people would buy nav these days and now you know at least one reason why someone might.

And it was actually tracking your location? I don't understand how it possible could.

Try turn off your wifi and cellular data and launch waze. What happens? on ios it won't even let you open it - says it needs a data connection. Same with Maps.

Edit: I think when you have google maps downloaded, if you lose your connection, it will try triangulate your location based on any wifi hotspots it can find - maybe that was what was happening?

i put it on airplane mode, iphone 6s plus with latest iOS and Waze. i made sure to close waze and reopen it, it opened right up, says searching for network in red up top, and then i selected "Work" and it routed a 13 mile commute, no ETA, i guess since it has no traffic data.

edit: i just turned airplane mode off, instead of 13 miles, it now says 18 miles, 32 mins. it rerouted to the fastest time instead of the shortest distance

No updates available.

I just do not understand how it can know your location if wifi and cellular data are off. Unless Apple has a satellite (or is renting space on one) and is letting either US based folks (I am in canada) or Iphone 6+'s access it for location services.

Maybe someone knows what is going on and will chime in. I am intrigued for certain. For now I am going to stick with black magic. :)

it's got a gps chip in it, like regular old garmin gps addon navs do, since the iphone 3G. it only uses AGPS (assisted gps) when available, which is most of the time, when youre not in the boonies. of course it needs data to retrieve traffic and other data to make it useful. i find the red light camera and police warnings to be quite helpful.

yeah its unreal. i had in car nav in the past and it's always sucked, on top of the yearly map updates, which are already obsolete by the time it reaches you.

i remember my first nav had CDs, and i had to swap them out whenever i left a region, LOL. I bought the updates, then sold the individual regions on ebay for a profit. that was the only good thing about it. this was before the smartphone era.

i got the notice for our 15 fusion the new map was out. i just went on ebay yesterday and bought one for $50. should arrive in a few days. I have the A5 SD Card in it now, the new one is the A7, i figure for $50, its a lot better than $150. We already traded our 15 mustangs on 17 mustangs, so hopefully it will be a while to update those and we have the apple play in it already.

Ya. That is fair enough. For some reason I was thinking GPS would only work if you had an internet connection - but that flies in the face of what gps is.

I actally just tried google maps in airplane mode and it pinpointed me fine. However, waze, apple maps, and find my friends all say it needs a network connection.

Sure wish I knew how your waze was working.

Edit: Does apple maps work for you in airplane mode?

was it a 'buy it now'? If so can you provide a link? I am finding only auctions and they are well above $50.
