Ok, im a little confused.
Just picked up a single channel with the Power Magic Pro
Does the power magic pro count as the hardwiring into the car?
I think I misunderstood the OP, he mentioned something about the cigarette lighter connection in his first post.
I just want to make sure I have everything required for install. Should be here tomorrow

Is there a way to get the camera into events-only mode?

The problem is here in Germany, the law can be pretty strict about DashCams in continuous record mode (privacy rights and big fines). And it depends on each individual judge if the video is admissible or not. All pretty hazy. I read that the are illegal in Switzerland and you need a special permit in Austria!

Any help with my my question is appreciated.
As I am also from Germany I can give my opinion about that. There has been a conference by judges for traffic recently. According to law it is not legal to have the camera continuously recording as this violates the individual right of protection from being observed. But there is no data protection police enforcing this law. There have been reports that cops in Bavaria may fine you, though I would go to the highest court fighting against this. The conference of judges recognized that in certain cases the recordings can be accepted as evidence. Posting these videos to youtube or the like could prevent this.

I get the Blackvue DR650GW-2CH installed by the dealer and the main purpose is to record the scenery on nice journeys. This is not illegal.

Best regards,

I have the 2-channel version and the power magic pro. I recognize that the camera has a plug for the cigarette lighter. With the camera a power magic modul came along with a cigarette lighter jack to connect with the camera. The power magic pro has the same coneection style. The wires from the power magic pro modul have to be connected to the electric system as described by the author of this thread.

Best regards,

You should have everything you need. The camera plugs into the power magic pro via cigarette lighter connection. the power magic pro needs to be tied into the fuse panel.

Is there any way to just avoid using the cigarette lighter portion and just hardwire the thing in?

That's what I'd rather have, is a permanent power source connected to the car.
Im looking at it now, and i see the Power Magic Pro portion near the cig. lighter connection has a power and ground going to it.
I could cut that portion off, but does the camera side of the plug only have two wires in that thick insulation?

I dont want to hack it up and there be a bunch of wires I cant figure out what goes where.

You can just leave it as is and tuck the plugs behind the fuse panel.

Well, im aware of that. I just want to get rid of added non-sense by removing the cigarette portion altogether. Im just curious if anyone has hacked up that harness that goes to the camera to do this yet.

I don't recall what the wiring looks like on the camera side.

It's just the AC power going to the cigarette lighter.
Im just wondering what the wiring looks like inside the insulation. If it's just a power and ground i'll solder it in myself.
If it's a bunch of wires, i dont want to go forward with that until i have a better understanding of it.
But i'd rather not hack into it first without guidance.

Ya, I don't know for sure, I imagine most cigarette lighter plugs are wired the same way?

Again install complete. The ground was a little annoying to get to, other than that it was a simple install

Quick video to show quality. It's really not bad!

foghat,

I've been looking at dash cams for a couple weeks now and purchased the Blackvue after reading this writeup. I will be installing in a couple weeks. Appreciate it.

Thank you! Was searching everywhere for some actual fuse numbers. I had tested and tested but was still a bit worried about going out to my car and having it not start.

I really appreciate the info and the great pictures.

Just got the camera and ran my cables. I was able to use a 6" extension and a 5/16" socket to loosen the screw. My question to confirm is which screw is the ground. I think it's the bottom but wanted to make sure.

Edit...pic went sideways so in this pic I have it as the right screw as the ground.
